Got a 13 yr old golden that needs more fat on her bones what would be the best for dog food I could give her ? She is in good health but the vet said she about 10 lb under what is should be. Still hunt her once a week so she is stil farly active.
    Thanx Josh

A buddy of mine had a lab that was in a similar situation. He was getting a dry food that was much lower in grain content and higher protien. In addition, he was adding (not in excess) eggs, bacon grease, & cooked trimmings from roasts and steaks. I’m not a vet and definitely not a dietritian. But that boy put some meat back on his bones and could run for hours like he was a pup again. Best wishes for her!

You are lucky. I took my 11 year old golden out hunting yesterday and she could barely stand up and walk by afternoon. Very sad. She is all done hunting. Fully retired now.

Most loaded question a guy could ask. There are way too many choices and opinions of them. Good luck.

Ok Ill bite. Like Suzuki said its a pretty loaded question and I only speek from my own experiances. I have tried 4 different foods in the 11 years since I brought home a wiggly ball of black fir named Madison.
    1. purina.. seemed like the thing to do at the time with my first puppy and all.
    2. ukanuba.. never had a nice shiney coat with purina so made the switch to a more “premium” food. she did well
    3. diamond.. sick of paying so much for a “premium” food tried it liked it
    4. Nutro. had my dogs trained at Cannon River Kennels they recomended it as the best Premium food for the money. I have to agree been feeding it for almost 5years and she is going great. Just got back from 8 days of hard hunting in ND for ducks, geese and pheasants. She hunted hard every day, 2days of couch time after we got back and she is ready to go again. Not bad for 11 years old

I don’t get into food brand debates, but it sounds like you’re free-feeding her. Is that correct? If not, just up the amount you give her.

Whatever you do be careful not to radically change the diet or increase the fat or protein level very much as it can cause Pancreatic failure, especially in an older dog. Using carbs instead of fat is easier on the digestive system to add weight. I added low fat cottage cheese and rice with a little ground up chicken and turkey that I boiled first. This was mixed in with his dry dog food to make it more enticing so he would eat more.
