Coletrain27Posts: 4789March 29, 2021 at 11:55 am #2025676we have 2 collie/heeler mixes, and a beagle. one of the collie/heelers definetly has more herding instinct than the other. she will play ball with you all day long and chase snowballs all day. they all 3 get along good for the most part. feeding time we have to watch them as the beagle likes to finish first and try to take the collies food at times
we have a 8 year old son and the one with the herding instinct is definetly his body guard. if there is somebody new at the house she will put herself between our son and the stranger every time until she knows the person isnt a threat.
March 29, 2021 at 4:27 pm #2025762not the same as a border collie but we have had 2 shetland sheep dogs, or shelties. definetley the herding genetics. not sure how you could ever get rid of that genetic????? the chasing in my opinion is part of the herding thing.
but our shelties wouldnt hurt a fly, but yea they like to think they got you herded for sure.
sorry best i can help!!!!!!

April 4, 2021 at 8:41 pm #2027589Love the bull terrier, Sharptailer. Years ago we had one in an obedience class with us (Dozer was his name). That dog was so stubborn, it cracked me up! He’d only do things on his terms.

Here is the newest dog of IDO, Chet (Chester).Edit: Same picture but rotated.

are you not concerned about that tree rat or any other biting your hound???
That was and always will be my biggest fear. I’d be afraid it would stop a dog from retrieving in the future?????

Not terribly concerned. He ended it pretty quickly with a few head shakes. He’s gotten into it with a wiley rooster or two and it’s never deterred him from retrieving.

I’ve had two dogs bit by squirrels. In both instances they intensified their attack and ended it quickly. Maybe lucky they were both mature at the time and not puppies? I strive to keep my dogs from interacting with wild animals except birds of course. They still get the occasional rabbit in the back yard. My Pudelpointer will go after anything with fur so I have been lucky so far. Got her to back off a coon once and she chased a fawn into a pond.

One of mine does not discriminate and will find anything living and mess with it. Turtles, snakes, junebugs, toads, whatever. I’ve reached down in the grass for the “dead pheasant” he must have found and pulled out possums twice. Finds every raccoon in the WMA and gets in a standoff with it. One time it must have been a coyote he was face to face with but it was buried in thick grass and I couldn’t see it, they were just growling at each other until I dragged him out by the collar. Toads are what he finds at home quite a bit though and he’ll hold them in his mouth and drool ridiculous amounts until I make him drop it and put it on other side of the fence.

Nice, is that a Springer? I’ve been thinking of getting one of the smaller upland dogs for our next one.
Neil VanderboschPosts: 15May 27, 2021 at 2:48 pm #2039406French Brittany, supposedly run smaller than American Brits, so will end up as the smallest bird dog you can get, still full of energy.
