Squirrel Dog?

My family, wife, 6 year old boy and 8 year old girl, are looking for a good squirrel dog. I own an 8 year old yellow lab currently and will always have an outside duck dog. Our squirrel dog will be an inside dog and another companion to the family.

What breed to get? Since it will be inside we want a smaller breed. I have been looking around and we all like the looks of the Treeing Feist. They seem to be very hard to find. Can anyone steer us in the right direction? Or, can you suggest a breed that is great on squirrel, great in the house, and great with kids.

My brother had a cur dog. It was a smaller dog and made for a great inside dog. That thing was a cracker jack squirrel and coon dog. Very easy to train. Just found out it was called a Mountain cur. Look them up on the web, great treeing small game dogs.

Thanks for the response. I was in fact looking at a Cur, but the looks and the size doesn’t fit with the rest of the family. I guess we are looking for a good and very small squirrel dog, and the feist was a family favorite. Anyone know of a good place to get one close to MN?

I have an unexpected litter of Patterdale Terriers. I will be placing pups in early December. They are small, great with people and kids. But have an extremely high prey drive and good noses and are hell on any other living animal. Do you live inn the country or in town?

The mom treeing a big grey in my yard today. I’ve never hunted my Terriers on squirrels, but they all seem to naturally take to them. I’ve hunted then on other small game and they take to whatever they are started on. They are small dogs. She’s nursing pups so she’s a lot bigger around then she normally is.
