Really need a little more information but I will give you some general answers. If you plan on fishing the northern end of the Pool then the launch in Prescott is a good one. I think it cost $10 too launch there but it is a good ramp and close to the fishing on the north end. If you are fishing the southern end of the Pool then there is a launch at Treasure Island Casino. It is really just beyond the casino and is a free ramp.
Now to the fishing—-we fished last Friday and got 4 eaters and alot of little ones along with catfsih, smallies and drum. We had to search alot of wing dams to find the ones that were holding fish. The bite is not what it was in July and August but there are fish to be caught. We were fishing jigs/crawlers and casting cranks to the wing dams. Another option is trolling cranks if you are into that.
I think we are going to be out part of the day Saturday so if you see a green Lund Explorer stop by and say Hi. We can talk about how in a month or so the bite is going to take off

the launch in hastings is free but there’s currant and no docks, can be a little tricky, prescott has a launch right in town, not as much currant and they have docks. prescott will cost 5 or 10 bucks doen’t remember. as far as the walleye bite goes i don’t know for sure, haven’t been out for a few weeks but last i heard gettting a few on the wing dams. what day you plan on going? i’m hoping to get out a couple of times this weekend.
    good luck

Thanks for all the info. i think it will be sunday that i get out. i was thinking of launching in the prescott area and i don’t mind trolling cranks or throwing some jigs. Sounds like if i find some wingdams i could possibly find some fish.

    Hoss15,
Find the wing dams with your jigs, not your lower unit
    Jesse,
You may be right about 2 weeks, it has been a cool Fall so far. In a month even us old farts will be able to catch fish—then my address will be Pool 4 till next May

Well we have been looking for a new puppy and cant choose which breed to go with, its either a chesapeake bay retriever or a black lab. I keep reading things about cheesys that they are really hard to train but if you look hard enough you will find something bad about every bread. So my quetion is if you were to choose one which would it be.

The Chessy’s I’ve been around are great water dogs. However, they are a very loyal breed and tend to be on the “defensive” all the time. My experience is limited, but the few I’ve been around were hard headed and bullies to other dogs and people. Especially kids.

All that said, I’ve been around labs who were just as bull headed.

I have been only around one and didn’t care for it. Very protective and would only listen to one person, seemed aggressive as well but that could have been because of its upbringing.

I have a black lab/golden retriever mix and its an awesome dog. Very friendly with all people and dogs and he listens very well. I do not hunt with him so this all just natural behavior and not much training.

I’m a lab guy, hands down. And I know of some pups coming soon. Momma is going into heat this weekend. Not my dogs, not soliciting, just saying.

A Chessie is a great duck dog. But the 4 I have hunted with were super loyal to their owner. They would attack other dogs at boat landings. I grew up with one of them and bit me several times turn your back and boom. They are good with your family and that’s it. If you have small kids they will have a hard time bringing friends home. If you have boys and they do typical wrestling etc with friends it can turn ugly. These dogs own their people and stuff yards trucks boats etc. and assume everyone is an enemy. That being said I have met a couple that were just like a lab. But I don’t think they are the norm. Best thing is to call breeders and there reference’s go see some and note their behavior.

Maybe those 4 but I can find 4 labs the same way. YOU NEED MORE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BLAME ANY BREED. My chesses are awsome upland I dont duck hunt much any more. I take offense to any who bash the chessepeke. I have both three labs and 2 chesepekes. I have seen more labs go after my dogs than you can count on. Its not the dog its the owners. Do some research. Thats one spot that gets under my skin.
Now as far as labs vs chesepekes. First thing first is the breeder. A poor breeder is most likly going to give you poor results including some of the traits cheses have. They have been known to be protective and you can still get that with a poor breeder. They can be loyal I happen to like that, dosent mean they are going to attack anyone or thing. I purchased my chesepeks from a guy by the name of butch goodwin at northern flight retreivers. I dont think hes in business any more went into writing. His lines in my opinion were awsome. They trained super easy not hard headed at all. Little more of a personality than my labs. Loves people, honors others retreives just an all around good dog. When I swithed to labs I looked for another chesse first. They are now 14 and 17-18 in august. my younger chesse is small 50 lbs and I like that, my older girl is 80. Another reason I went labs (british) smaller in size. Total people dogs.
My labs are just like any other I have one thats a little tempermental and will growl over certain things around other dogs than my own. Two girls and a boy.
Hunting styles are close as far as my dogs go. I dont duck hunt much any more mostly upland. Never ran a shock colar on any of my dogs.
So anyone that tells you I know a guy or saw a dog once or My neighbors friends uncles cousins granpa had this dog attacked everyone and every thing is just plain UNEDUCATED and shouldnt be giving advice. My advice is to pick a good breeder. Both breeds are good you will get a little more loyaty out of the chesses. The chesses have a little more oil to their fur and depending on the line can be a little more wirery hair with a thicker coat.
good luck in your purchase, dont let these guys talking about this one dog I saw once change your mind or push you in any one direction. Pic a good breeder and enjoy.
P.S. to most above its in a study do a search there have been more people bit by labs than any other breed.

    From my experience:

Chessies- I have seen the same as the other guys above. Guy I hunt with used to own a Chessie, hunted with him for several years. Rocky was tough as nails. He was extremly loyal to my buddy, excellent obedience but wouldnt listen to anyone else. Exceptional hunter both upland and waterfowl. Very aggresive or protective maybe, especially when there was a bird on the ground. Buddy had to put Rocky down a while back, he now owns a lab.

Labs- I have owned 1 lab, Brooks. He was a total softy except when around Rocky the Chessie and my brothers Shorthair Bart. When Brooks would get close to Rocky or Bart, they would growl at each other and then all hell would break lose. Every other dog, no matter what breed, Brooks had no problems with. I won’t go into all the other labs I have had contact with because that would just take too long. Let’s just say that all the encounters were all positive.

Besides Brooks, I have owned 2 Shorthairs. I am no longer a dog owner so I have no dog in this fight. (Sorry, couldnt resist).

I’ve not done any reasearch on this or passing on hearsay. No I have a buddy that has one or I have heard that they are….. Just my personal experiences with ONE Chessie and ONE Lab.

Good luck with your choice and enjoy!

I have had a Chessie and and I have had labs. I will tell you this Its not always the owners fault my Chessie was a prick to all other dogs and some people. I did everything i could to make that dog more passive it just wasn’t in him. I have had one lab that was aggressive to other dogs when she was younger I did everything i could to make her more passive and now she dont even give other dogs a second look, even around the food bowl. Fact is most Labs aint fighters and the ones who are typically are correctable. I have had quite a few bird dogs and have lots of buddies who have them as well and except for the occasional food bowl issue. Our dogs all hunt together well, all are labs except for 2 shorthairs.

I will always be a lab guy

You just cant go wrong with a lab they are like a jack of all trades, they can do anything, any season, any weather, any game.

Good luck finding a black lab with good pedigree. I have been on the hunt for over a month now trying to locate one in the state. Cant find any worthy of driving 50+ miles to go see. I might have to expand my search out to out of state!

Coming into this conversation late, but IMHO a breeder has much more to do with individual dog characteristics than a breed. It seems as if you have determined that either breed will suite your needs and I firmly think either breed would work for you and you would be happy.

Get out there and do some research on breeders, meet the parents, see them hunt, see them around kids/families. Check pedigrees, look at genetic defects, hip and eye certifications and all other items you can view. I think you will meet and talk with one breeder and it will just drop into place and you will know it is right.

I have always said a dog is what you make of it. More time with the dog, a good training/obedience regiment and you can make a Yorkie retrieve and look good doing it

The stories above are pretty consistent with any and all research I have read about Chessies. Me personally, I would go with Lab. Especially in this sue crazy world we live in.
