When do you feed your dog?

On hunting days when do you feed your dog? My dog gets fed once a night everyday. After a day of hunting she rarely eats, so I’m wondering if I should try to give her food in the morning. I’ve always heard it can be bad for them, but I’ve seen plenty of dogs pig out in the morning and hit the fields minutes later.

Fife, I fed my dog twice a day normally and I try to keep my dogs breakfast fairly light if he is hunting right away at day break. In MN I’m usually up early (3-4 am) and I feed him normal then giving him time to digest before the 9 am Hunt. If I hold back food on him in the am I usually make up for it in the PM. He has no issues eating at night after a hunt.

I feed mine twice a day and the same when hunting. She usuallly eats a good 2 hours or so before hunting. I also give her a half ration at lunchtime break when we are working hard.

We only feed once a day, in the evening after they are done for the day. After a day of hunting or if we are on the road we mix in some canned chicken and gravy with their regular food to enhance their eating.

I have a rule of thumb of two hours before and two hours after. Both in hunting or harder training and conditioning situations. During the hunting season if I do not have the two hour window before, the feeding is done afterwards. I do supplement in the field with meat/protein treats.

Thanks, my dog is probably the pickiest eater I’ve ever seen. She eats very little unless shes in her kennel at home, so its always a battle. I’ve tried to break her of this, but she’ll go 4 days without eating and I don’t like to do that during hunting season. I think feeding in the morning will work better when we’re hunting, so I’ll give it a try.

It’s pretty common for a dog not to eat when you are away from home and hunting, it’s nerves in my opinion. What me and my frinds do (and usually it’s with younger dogs) is by the cheapest, smelliest wet food we can find and mix about half a can of it with the normal dry food that we feed. We do this morning and night.
