Here is what happened yesterday, Molly our lab was doing her favorite thing retrieving a dummy, in her enthusiasm, she dove nose first into the snow and ran muzzle first into a rock under the snow, she hit it at full steam, knocked her silly, well she cut her lip and chipped a bunch of teeth and knocked one loose

Anyone ever had this happen? We are bringing her into the vet today, gave her some aspirin for pain

Nothing worse than seeing your pal in pain

Sounds like you are on the best course.
The aspirin is always a good idea when they can’t tell you how much pain they are in.
My Chessie had a similar experience chasing pheasants in a junk pile. Accidents always suck, but especially during the season
You should have plenty of recovery time before next season.
    Good luck
    cheers

MSorry to here about the dog. Just remember with the aspirin to use baby/ or buffered. If I recall correctly it is 5mg per pound. If you got a good vet may be able to get some rimadol to keep on hand things that happen.

    Good luck at the vet,

Been there a few times. Mine lost two front teeth from an impact with a rock when charging for a dummy on the edge of the yard. It just gave her a gap-toothed smile. Another time, she tried catching a softball sized rock that a moron threw. She caught it mid-air and it removed most of two canine teeth and a molar at the gum-line. That was a bad one.

The vet will take care of it and tyhe dog will be fine. They are tough and resiliant. I think it hurts the owner worse to see it than it does the dog.

I assume the “moron” you speak of paid the vet bill on that one! What kinda’ idiot throws a rock for a dog to catch? RR

Nope. I thought he should have paid it, but I didn’t raise a fuss.

It was unintentional(stupid, yes, but unintentional). He had picked up a rock and was looking at the pattern of quartz in it. He went to toss it away – not thinking that the dog was next to him and that she might give chase. A dog owner would not have done that.

Holy smokes, worse than they thought, she went under today, cracked jaw, 2 broken canines, they are going repair these, got to pull an incisor, and chipped all the teeth on the lower back side.

So be careful if you have a enthusiastic retriever

6 weeks with cast possibly more if they have to pull more teeth

If her teeth dont line up they may have to pull a upper canine so it doesnt hit the bottom canine, then if the bottom canine does not live, they have to do a root canal to kill it, they want to keep the lower canine in because it adds strength to the lower jaw bone.

Jessica said when she hit the object it sounded like someone hitting a sign with a bat

Hopefully all goes well and it will only be the six weeks.
When she heels up, we will get her out on some birds.
