I get asked quite often how or when to use tone when E-collar training. I train the dogs to avoid stimulation when training with the collar. During this training we are using low level stimulation and I never use tone before stimulation. This is our yard training. Now before we started the training, the dog has been given the tone just to make him aware of it. After the yard work when we are out on walks or simulated hunting training, I will give tone before stimualtion once in awhile. This makes the dog aware that tone means something but does not always preceed stimulation.
A very simple and effective way is to train the dog that tone means to come back to you and look for further instruction. You can also train the dog the same way you would with a whistle. The key here is you can hunt those wily late season birds without any verbal or whistle commands. Also your dog hunts all day without any or very little stimulation.
The video is a few days after hunting season and we are out training. While the dogs are in front of me, I give them tone to bring them back. As they get close, I then signal them to my right. When the dog stops, I then give him tone to bring him back and continue to my front.
I hunt almost everyday and in a months time I can count on one hand how many time I give the dogs stimulation. I have gone as long as 4 hours without giving the dog a verbal or whistle command, except on retrieves or downed birds.
If your getting a new dog or thinking about E-collar training, give this method a try.

I have used that same method with the vibration function on my collar. He was trained to heel with the vibration and it works great. I think I could count on one hand how many times I had to use stimulation on him this hunting season and I think maybe 5-10 times I used the vibration.

This is a great use of the collar and I know it put more birds in the bag. The one bad thing is that it uses a lot of battery juice.

Thanks for another great tip Don!

Thanks for bringing that up. I forgot to mention the vibration.

I use the tone for “here” as well. They know what will follow if they don’t.

I too have train my dog with the tone. He hears the tone and look back at me for what to do next. With a quick hand juster he on his way. Work real nice for the late season birds. I was out hunting this fall with a friend. He ask why did I not have to use my voice with my dog all day. I just smiled and said he is just that good. Knowing that I was talking with my dog all day with the remote.
