My dog Moose seems to have started to get whiny when we are either in the duck boat or layout blind and it is getting a bit annoying. He is a very obedient dog and is well behaved, but he whines. He doesn’t whine loud, it just is enough to get on my nerves. I think it stems from excitement, but it doesn’t seem to stop after the first few retrieves.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it stop? It’s not loud enough for a bark collar and I don’t want to electronically correct him for that when he is being very obedient in every other way. I wish he could understand me when I tell him to “just relax and enjoy yourself”.

The whining is probably due to his boredom between retrieves. It is annoying no doubt. What you can try in a few short training sessions is this. Either on walks or playing a retrieving game. Probably a retrieving game would be better in your case. Anyway, have a crate nearby. have the dog do a retrieve or two and then crate him up. he should start whining because he wants out to play some more. Leave himin the crate until the whining stops. Then let him out and play fetch again. Do this a couple of times a session and he should come along fine.

Thanks Don. So when I crate him, is it important that I stay right there too, like I would be hunting?

Your theory makes sense to me as I also get bored sometimes between his retrieves. How do I stop my whining?

You can stay close by but ignore him until the whining stops. When he is quiet, let him out and play the game again.
For your whining I would go with the ear pinch!

I appreciate the advice. My wife will work on the ear pinch and I will work with the dog.

do you think that your dog is whining because he is tired of listening to your whining in the boat?

I used the E-collar to stop this in my dog. every time she winnes i nick her. NOW the trick to doing this is to never say anything to the dog at all dont even look at her! and everytime she winnes nick her. the dog will think she is turning the stimulation on and off herself. let me know if you need anymore help.
