In the field

Another thing I did if we were just out for exercise is to carry a couple of clipped wing birds with me. When he wasn’t looking I would toss a bird off to the side and signal him to it.
The above statement was taken from an earlier training post and I thought it may come in handy now the season is almost here.
If you have not steadied your dog yet, and are thinking it may chase missed birds or hens. carry a bird with you or use the first one you shot. When you shoot again and miss . Toss the bird off to your side and recall your dog. When it returns to you it will find the bird close by. This gets most dogs to respond to the recall before romping over most of the field and flushing birds out of range

Good idea Don, I rememeber a few times my dog rangeing out, tossing a wing on the ground and getting them use to coming back and getting it keeps them in range and helps them listen to you. Good idea.
