Removing skunk smell

I’ve got two dogs that were sprayed by a skunk last night. Is there anything I can use to get the smell out of their hair and skin, so I can let them back in the house? I’ve heard of Skunk-out. Does it work? Thanks,

I used a mixture of Lemon Joy dish soap, Lemon Juice, a little peroxide and water and it worked really well. Got it in SD really bad a couple years ago. We were able to sleep in the same hotel room with the dog that night so I can tell you it works

This recipe works better than any store bought product, and most of the store bought products are variations of this less the peroxide….

Buy large quart size bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide, mix with 3 table spoons baking soda and a bit of dish soap.

Completely soak the dog with this stuff leave for 20 minutes…..then rinse and wash… repeat until the smell is gone.

I have had dogs sprayed and back in the house less than 2 hours later.

Or if you just want to go somewhere buy it and be done with it, we have had good success with the store bought skunk out.

If it were me, I’d be afraid of mixing something up that might harm the dog. But that’s just me!

    Good luck!

Try using human scent eliminator spray that deer hunter and the like use. I always have a bottle in the truck during hunting season for that exact reason. It works real nice. Sherm

My dogs get it several times a year. Scott’s recipet works well as does “skunk off” which I get at my vet. The key to both solutions is to SOAK the dog with it and let it sit, get it between the toes, EVERY nook and cranny, work it in, rinse repeat. Give the solution/skunk off time to work, the longer you let it sit the better it works.

I prefer the skunk off as it’s just easier for me rather than gathering the ingredients and mixing the solution. I keep a couple bottles it the dog bag at all times. Many hunting trips I’ve had to use it. 2 things my dog bag always has a few of…skunk off and EMT gel.

Renedy has a very similar recipe to the one I have used and recommended for years… I use a quart of peroxide, a quarter cup of baking soda and a tablespoon of dishwashing detergent. Do not get it into the dogs eyes or ears. Throw the collar away if you don’t want to wait for the scent to wear off – in my experience – even soaking it in this solution doesn’t remove the scent… but it does work well on the dogs. Don’t try tomato juice – you’ll just wind up with a dog that smells like skunk chili! Can’t recommend it! Chuckles

Mixing the peroxide and baking soda isn’t dangerous. Both are household grade chemicals.

Baking soda is actually the weakest alkali among sodium compounds, with a PH near 8, about what you get in a can of coke. If you go to the pet store and buy dry shampoo for cats & Foo-Foo dogs it is usually baking soda with some perfume.

Hydrogen Peroxide you have to be a little more careful with, as it is an irritant to mucus membranes like the eyes, but the stuff you are getting from the drug store is typically a 3%. Because of that it’s hard to really do serious damage with it if you rinse is a reasonable amount of time – and even if you would not it really wont be the end of the world, just makes pooch itchy.

Reason that Baking soda & Peroxide work well is baking soda (alkali) will remove the acid odor very well by neutralizing it. Hydrogen Peroxide will break down and dissolve the smell by the release of free oxygen radicals, which is the fizzing you see. The soap is just acting as a efficient carrier to help the water rinse away the stinky from Mr. urine Kitty.

The problem with hydrogen peroxide is it does not take well to being diluted. It starts to weaken from the time they bottle it; so you want the freshest you can get as it will do the most for you. The skunk-off you buy will typically not have hydrogen peroxide in it for this reason, or if it does it has probably gone flat. They are stronger alkali base products – so you only really get ½ the stink killing action.

When you apply this solution make you apply it while it is still fizzy – that is when it is most active.

What ever you decide to do….

    Good Luck!

The skunk off can be bought at the big box pet stores, vets, etc. I thnk I saw it a wallyworld once but never again. Here’s a link to EMT

I use the EMT for ripped pads and barbwire cuts, and most often for the rash/burn all around my dogs eye’s snout and face from the brush, both dogs get the hair worn right off their faces during season, the gel helps it heal and keeps the burn from exessive “weeping” or scars.

I also agree with collar comment…skunk spray doesn’t like to come out of them, even the plastic style hold that smell.

Thanks for the info. I will need to get some. Where can you buy it? This will be my frist hunting season with a dog. What other thing must you not leave with out in the dog bag?
