What are you guys doing for training your dogs in the late spring and summer? I do not want to mess with nesting birds or over heat my dog.

As an average non-hardcore bird dog person I only work on physical and command training. Lots of water work and exercise. I dont put my dog in front of a bird all summer. Nobody I run with does either.

May 4, 2007 at 3:17 pm #31431Obedience, some fun games of Fetch and as much water fun/training as possible.
However my dog will be 8. He knows what to do and what birds are for. If I had a pup, I would probably be on a different routine and getting / introducing him into as many things as possible (ie, Scented Dummies, pigeons, more strict training, with a lot of water training again, etc.)

May 4, 2007 at 4:01 pm #31433I am working on water retrieves and different handling drills. Nice short and sweet sessions. Every now and then a rooster pops out around the yard, so I have to send her after it.

May 4, 2007 at 4:17 pm #31434Water water and more water…I dont use my dog for waterfowel hunting only upland game. But I like to keep her active during the summer as she puts on a good 5 pounds over the winter and its easier on her come fall if shes active during the summer..So I work her hard most every weekend when we are at the cabin…doesnt matter if its retrievs or simply swimming in the lake …I make a point to get her workin pretty good and it seems to help come hunting season.

May 4, 2007 at 8:39 pm #31436At the cabin my dog will let her tennis ball roll down the bank or she will push it off the dock, wait for it to drift away then jump in after it. Repeat. Its like a hampster in a tread mill. I dont have to lift a finger!!! Of course she’d rather I threw it which I do a lot.
