Sheding???

I have a yellow lab roughly six months old. It is like she is going bald. I had a black lab before and do not remember this much hair. I sweep up around the kennel where she sleeps every 2-4 days and brush her every other day for about a month! Its like there is no end in sight!
I have had here staying outside because it is so bad. I know they shed basically all year round but this is bad. Could she be lacking something in her diet?
I feed her Purina Puppy Chow that my vet recommended. Any thoughts?
I have read the post about adding a fish oil to the food to help out, but where to you get it from?
    Thanks in advance for sharing.

A buddy of mine swears an egg white in the food every week helps, from the coat on his dog I guess I have no reason to doubt him.

My dad always fed his dog one raw egg every week as he said it made the coat shine. I have also heard that show dogs also eat raw eggs a day or two before a dog show to help their coat shine.

As far as the lab losing that much hair I would have the vet check him out. It just doesn’t sound normal. It could be something it has been eating or it could be a parasite or some sort of skin disease. The only way to find out for certain is to take the dog to the vet.

Sounds to me like your dog is shedding it’s winter coat. This time of year dogs will loss that thick under coat. Along with that, seeing how it’s a growing pup, they’ll lose that thick puppy coat at around 6 months. Unless your dog is actually going bald, sounds normal this time of year and for that age pup. My dogs are shedding like crazy right now, I wonder how they can lose that much hair and still have a coat. My folks have a young yellow, my mother was just telling me how much hair is on her NEW furniture! Sounds normal unless she’s actually going bald, if her coat is still full I don’t think it’s a concern.

Check with vet. Maybe a fattier food would help. My pup was under weight when little and vet recommended Eukenuba puppy. He said it was very rich. It was. Dog bulked up but the gas was terrible. Switched back to regular Purina once she grew out of puppy food. She sheds contantly but nothing major. Appears to be normal for a golden.

I could quite my job and be a professional pillow maker with the amount of hair that comes off my lab/chessie mix. Google up the Furminator. It sucks out the undercoat and the service is available at some vet offices and groomers. I had him checked at the vet last visit and all they said was to get a special brush which looked like a horse brush. They said he was normal. He sheds all year long, but spring/early summer is really bad.

Thanks for everyones advice. Last night when I was brushing her it was not as bad as in the past. Hopefully it is starting to slow down. See how it goes over the weekend! I have been using a shedding blade for a brush??? I think that is what it is called.

She’s probably blowing her puppy coat. Usually dogs blow their coats in the late spring and in the fall.

We use Shed-Stop for our black lab. It seems to really help. My gf’s son and I have really bad allergies, and I think this has helped us, as well. They’ve recently changed the formula to make it much easier to use. It used to be a thick syrup, almost like molasses, but now it is more of a liquid. You mix it with their food every day. The previous formula had an ingredient that helped with his hip displacia as well, but now they’ve done away with that. Good product, none the less.

My dog sheds a ton also, She is a yellow lab and just over a year old. She is not going bald or anything like that. We had two other chocolate labs and they didnt seem to shed much at all just in the spring and fall when they loose or gain winter fur. Maybe it is just something with yellow labs.
