Sunday was our first training day with the Southern Minnesota NAVHDA chapter. If anyone has an interest in training their pointing / versatile dogs this is a good venue to get involved with. On Sunday we had English Setters, German Shorthairs, German Wirehairs, Small Munsterlanders, Drathaars and a Cesky-Fousek. All the dogs and handlers were at different levels in their training. I believe that the youngest dog that was there was 8 weeks old. It is fun to do a little “off season” training.
Attached are a few pictures of our dogs taken on the training day.

Great pictures, thanks for posting. I am working two dogs at the present time. They sure seem to have more energy now that it has warmed up. Doing obedience training this week, getting ready for bird introduction.

Cool pictures! This is a great time of year to get out training. The weather isn’t too hot for the dog and it is warm enough for me. My goal this spring is to improve her handling and to get her on some birds before it gets too hot out. If things go well, I might grab another pup from the trainer to work with. The roosters are getting a little antsy and they are wandering all over. My dog flushed one in my neighbors back yard and I have never seen a pheasant near there before. Maybe he was one of my training birds I lost this winter. Anyone have a lead on some pigeons or a good place to trap?

I too have been working on obedience and some fetch work. Don you are right with the warmer temps. My dog’s energy is way up too. It seems I can not run him hard enough. Or maybe he does not know went to say I had enough lets go home. Can you say energizer bunny. The harder I run him the more he want it.

We belong to a couple of NAVHDA Chapters and are primarily training at this point with the Southern MN Chapter. Here is a link to their training schedule. http://www.somnnavhda.com/SoMN_NAVHDA_Calendar.html

Another chapter closer to the metro area is the MN Chapter and they also have excellent training opportunities. Here is their training schedule link. http://www.mnnavhda.com/Local_events.htm

NAVHDA is a nonprofit corporation set up for amateur trainers that want to create great versatile hunting dogs through positive training. Everyone is welcome to stop by a training day and see they are all about.

I should of had the camera! I forgot how funny it is introducing a pup to live birds. In about a 1/2 hours time the pup went from crouching down barking at the bird- to rolling on top of it- to picking it up and deciding it was snack time! With the next live bird the pup was fetching(with a little coaxing). By the end of the session, the pup was retrieving and almost delivering to hand. Spent most of the day doing training sessions. perfect weather!

It certainly was a perfect day for training. We were fogged in early in the morning but it wasn’t a big problem. We started out doing backing/honoring sequences around the yard and later ran the field with great results.

We also introduced a young dog to birds yesterday. It was rewarding to see a dog that didn’t have a clue what a pigeon was, go from ignoring them, to pointing them until we produced the bird and then retrieving them back. It is fun to watch the genetics kick in.

We did take a few pictures of the day. Actually my wife takes the pictures as she enjoys the training also as long as she doesn’t have to gun.
