After a month it looks like we have all the details worked out to adopt a 2 year old female grey hound/Great dane mix. She’s only about 60-65lbs and will be pet for the most part. We will be an indoor outdoor dog and we may occationally use her run yotes depending on how well she takes to it.

This will be the first dog I’ve ever use a training collar on and I’ve been reading Don Hansens thread. Any and all advise will be appreciated.

    Thanks

I also have a 20lb terrier mix that we’ve had for a couple years. He will also be getting a training collar. He’s been threw obedience and is pretty well trained. He’s just mixed with some type of small hound(maybe beagle) and he’s a nose dog and loves to run. He won’t run away, he alway comes back(…eventually), but it’s impossible to get him off a track. I littery have to catch him and pick him up to get him off a track and this needs to change. So I will be introducing him to a training collar to work on this.

I’ve decided on a innotek IUT-1002 unit becasue of the small slim recievers that will fit better on the small dog.

Here is a picture of the new girl.

With a new dog, let it get used to the new surroundins. Then start with the basic commands on leash first. Guys have got back to me and said that the method I outlined was working good for their dogs.

Like Don said, takeit slow, and only introduce the collar as a correction after the dog 100% has the command down pat, which means using a leash or a check cord depending on what you want to do.

Remember, the dog has to be put into a situation where there is no other way to do the command but the correct way many many times before it will understand any correction.

E-collars in no way help the dog to learn faster.
