You might go through a few brands until you find whats best. Just make sure to get quality food. Science Diet, Iams, Ukanuba, Natural Choice and the top dollar Purina are good choices. The first year he/she will need puppy formula which is high in protein.

My last dog lived over 16 years(husky/wolf cross) on Kibbles and Bits.. no weight issues, plenty of energy. We still feed our dogs the same today… little extra weight from the table scraps now.

Some of the *top shelf* foods out there you have to be careful. They are full of nutrients, protien, and fat that is good as long as your dog gets enough exercise to put all that energy where it belongs.. in the muscle. If you feed that stuff to a couch-potato, your going to have some weight issues.

I fed my lab Purina One large breed puppy for the first year and then switched to Purine One Large breed. Had no issues with the food until my dog developed an allergy to it. I then switched to Iams lamb and rice and have had no issues with that food.

I have been feed ing my Basset IAMS since day one and of coarse the occassional T-bone and he is in perfect health according to his vet!
Science Diet and Purina one are good foods as well. You can also consult your local petshop,PetSmart,Petco and they can also fill you in on the protein and other vitamins required for a healthy dog..

I switched my Chocolatye from IAMS to Nutra its a Hoilistic dog food with all natural ingredients, all organic. She responed well. They also have a puppy addition. That I hear nothing but good about.

I have a friend that shows Mastiffs they are national champs with a private trainer, this lady knows her stuff. Digestive wise this is the best I have seen stools are always firm which makes clean up nice and easy. Plus her intake went from 3.5 cups to 2 cups aday 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. Along with supplements in the hunting seson, she acts like a 2 year old. She will be 11 this spring.

I would seriously consider holistic or all organic for many healthy years

I would agree with Eyedoctor, alot of your “Top Brands” use fillers like corn that do nothing for your dog. I’ve been using the Nutro for about five years with no complaints.

I had great results starting my Black Lab with Nutra Large Breed Puppy and then swithing to the Nutra adult formula (whatever its called). You’ll pay a little more for these types of dog foods but I think its well worth it…I spent a lot of time a the pet food wharehouse looking at ingredient lists and this stuff seemed to be the best. If I remember correctly, Eukanuba was very similar, but that stuff gave my buddies dog some really nasty breath. The Nutra will give your dog’s coat a shine like no other

The “Rule of thumb” my vet told me years ago is this. The “Cheaper” dog foods are cheap for a reason. Not a lot of “good” stuff in it. Dogs need to eat more of this sort of food to get the nutrition they need thus you will see more crap in your yard to pick up.
Now the more expensive dog foods have much more nutrition so dogs don’t need to eat as much thus less doggy poop in your yard or your neighbors!

When I ran a string of pointer field trial dogs I tried many brands. On Iames & Euk the dogs seemed to get to hot in the summer & camr in to the H2) jug too much. Not such a problem w/ a hunting situation but a sure wat to be a “donater” vs a hardware checkcasher/ The dogs looked good, just didn’t have the aerobic stamina that I wanted.
I did a very well w/ Purina Pro Plan. The Royal Canine lines were okay also. Back in the late 90s RC paid you CASH for wins. Thus I used that whenb they had that program. That strictly driven by thr cash back, kind of like a fishing pro shilling for his sponsor at the weigh in.
I now feed Diamond. Good food for the money. The dogs I have aren’t being worked at all so to say they hold up would be missleading. I went to it because another trainer was using it for his string and they looked good. I also like the price.
A final thought, sled dog racers have ultra conditioned teams, and lots of dogs w/ a large feed bill. If you have a local that does that see what they feed and see if they will sell you food anda savings.

For what it is worth we feed Purina Pro Plan Performance year around and have been happy with it. Our dogs eat it well and have great coats and endurance. We regulate the amount we feed by the activity level of the dog. The dogs have small firm stools which make for easier pick-up and some people feel that firm stools also help keep the anal gland suppressed. Although up front it may seem like it is pricey I believe that the smaller portions make is very affordable. On the political side of dog food, Purina does a great deal in supporting pro-hunting sports.

I feed my lab Diamond Performance. She is very active with training and hunting so I use the Performance. My friends use the Maintenance mixture for their house dogs. My trainer feeds Purina Dog Chow and they have 10+ year old dogs that are still going strong with no problems ever. The gas they kick out is another story.
