Here is what my off season training schedule looks like.

At a minium I work the dog 1.5 hours a day – broken down into 2 sessions. Session 1 is a walk including simulated hunting situtations. session 2. is hunting situations and command training.

Once a week I try to involve work with another dog.

Bi-monthly I will include 1/2 day hunts. Flushing, shooting and retrieving birds.

Remember, even if you can only get your dog out for walks- you can mix in training during the session.

Great advise ! We all tend to forget about giving the dogs exercise in winter and its not fair to them…RR

We also mix training into just routine tasks around the house. We have Small Munsterlanders which are a pointing breed. We integrate much of their obedience training into everyday events. We try and run them daily as a fun time and when we get more serious we will start to road them with a four wheeler.

For this year our “off-season” will consist of getting young dog ready for her Natural Ability test through NAVHDA system. With her we will be working on pointing, tracking, retrieving and most of all just having fun. With our 2 ½ year old male we will be training towards his NAVHDA Invitational test. We will start out by working on blind retrieves, honoring at the blind and general obedience. We will get together with others and run 2-4 dog braces for pointing, backing and retrieving. Our older female gets the job of being the set up dog when no one else can be there.

All in all I think that our “off season” is as much, or perhaps more active then our hunting seasons as it goes about 9 months. Dogs that are being utilized are happy dogs!

The attached picture is of our 9 month old pup “Breezie” pointing a pigeon yesterday.

This is our male Samer doing a little “off season” pointing. This weekend due to the cold we will be working on house manners.
