teaching the pup to quarter is one of the easiest training sessions to master. here are a couple of ways to get started.
If you have a couple of buddies that are willing to help you, here is the first one. Start walking with your buddies flanking your sides. You want to spread out the distant you want the dog to work while hunting. With the dog in the middle, in front of you, have the your buddies alternate calling the pup in their direction. When the pup reaches the desired area, have the guy on the other side call the pup in his direction. Use as much enthusiasm as it takes to get the pup to respond.
If you don’t have many friends or at least ones that shy away from exercise, you can do the training session alone. Have the pup working in front of you and then quarter away from him. Call your pup and it will return to your front. When the pup starts working in front of you, quarter away in the other direction.Keep repeating the process. In a very short time your pup will be checking back to see where you are located. Usually by this time the pup will pick up on hand signals. You can then walk in a straight line and signal the pup what direction you want it to quarter.
While doing this drill, to make sure the pup is checking back on my location and to keep it in the zone- I will step behind a tree or duck out of sight. Just a fun part of the exercise to keep the pup focused on your location.
When first getting started, I like a field with grass about belly high to the pup.
