I am going to get a Lab for my grandson. I have had several hunting dogs over the years but never had to make this decision. Which makes the better dog over time, weight gain and everything else considered. A spay female or a neutered male. I would like your opinion or advice. Thanks in advance. moler02

Dogs are as individual in their personalities as are humans…get a pup with a good health and temprament backround.
While males are taller and stronger…its more about nose, sprit, loyalty and obedience. I’ve had several Labs of both sexes and I would look at all the pups and pick one out with the personality you like…

Its 90% your responsibility to train him/her to be the kind of dog you desire.

    Good Luck…They are great dogs!

Wow, thats a tough question. I think it comes down to what you want out of a dog. Either sex will do great if trained well, and I think it is the training more then the sex that will make a good dog. I have heard that males are more stubborn and hard to train, but that has not been my experience. I have heard that females train easier but are more tempormental (sp) but again, that has not been my experience.

I think you need to get good blood lines, and verify that both the mother and father are hunters, and with labs especially, verify the hip dysplasia is not in the genetics. There are some shady breeders out there, just verify you use one of the good ones.

Good luck, either way you go, you will not be disapointed.

My female was spayed at 6 months and never gained weight or lost drive at all, in fact, if she had lost a bit and mellowed it may have helped. She is big too, about 80 pounds or so.

I have never met a lab that wont eat ALL the food thats in the dish if giving the chance. I agree with all the other guys as far as getting good blood lines and stuff. My experiance with my labs and guys that I hunt with has been to keep the dog on a twice a day feeding regimin and adjust it according to the dogs excercize level less food in the summer doledrums and more feed during hunting season. the fact is labs get FAT when they are on full feed all year round, male or female. Now I just need to have the wife put me on a twice a day feeding regimine based on my excercize level

I agree, regimented feeding is key for me with my lab. I give high performance food in the fall only.

On the subject of food, there is no punihsment, shock collar, beat down, anything, that will kep my lab from grabbing any unwatched and avaiable food on the counters or tables.

amen to that. I think they are wired on a circut thatoverloads when there is any food left unattended. and if you are a child under the age of about 6 and have food in your hand, well be prepared to see it go by by weather you like it or not

Ditto what the others have said. Get a lab with good breeding and be diligent and thoughtful in your training and you will have the best hunting companion available. make sure you get a health guarentee and both parents are hip and eye certified. Gender is unimportant.
