We just brought home a 8 week old GSP. She gets her business done when we are out but has had a few accidents in the house. Any ideas on how to handle this so she understands what I am asking her to do?

I always used to associate the word “go Potty” to my dog when he was learning, and then praise the heck out of himn after he did it. It got to the point where he will go on command now!

Remember, it is only a 8 week old puppy, they are bound to have accidents Keep at it and she will get it.

Congrats on getting a new dog

We put a set of jingle bells on the front door and when he had an accident I would take him to the door and ring the bells and send him outside and tell him to go potty outside. Within 2 weeks he was ringing the bells on his own to go outside.

Either use a crate or paper train it. If you use the paper traning method, restrict the pup to a small area of the house. They Don’t like to mess in their area. As the pup uses the paper, move it close to the door. In a very short time the pup will be going outside.

I did what Don mentioned. You can get training pads from a pet store. They dont leak through and they are scented to make them go on the pad. Keep moving the pad close to outside and eventually place the pads on the lawn. Very important to praise when they do well. Also need to remember they can hold thier potty about 1 hour per months age. So at 8 weeks she can do about two hours max. Try to keep her outside as much as possible.

Crate training is the way to go. The pup should be in a crate if it is not under direct supervision. Crate training will have other benifits for the dog. Comfort when traveling for one. Also the crate becomes a refuge for the pup when the world gets too much for it. Never correct a dog once it is in the crate. Make sure the crate is properly sized for the dog, full size crates are too big for most pups.

I also used the “Go Potty” technique combined with the crate. I also never left the puppy unattended in the house. My puppy is about 1 1/2 now and he still doesn’t get to roam the house unnattended. We bought a baby gate to make sure he didn’t roam around without us noticing. When Moose was young, I would wait him out to “go potty.” He will pretty much go on command now.

    Good Luck
