I called the vet and he was totally on the same page as Clark, water is best. sodium makes dogs retain water not allowing them to cool down by panting since dogs cant sweat it is a fast way to melt your dog down. I call madison back a minimum on every 30 min for a splash and go in hot weather “over 50 deg” its kind of funny she knows its time for a drink when I call her back she comes in I put the bottle in the corner of her mouth give her a squirt and off she goes hardly stopping. remember to bring lots of water during pre season conditioning too.

Also stay away from drinks with simple sugars in it. The dogs body will send water to the gut to mobilize the sugar thereby dehydrating the dogs muscles. If you want to use a sugar based drink at least use one that has a complex sugar in it. Maltodextrin seems to be the one the “experts” say might work. But again water is really all you need.

If you have a dog that is in shape prior to the season, there should not be a need for that dog to need anything other then water and some rest between hunting fields. I run my dogs all day long and they never get anything other then water. Well they may get a bit or two of my sandwitch : they need a little lunch too…

when im training my dogs for a weight pull tourny i use pedialyte to replenish electrolytes in my dogs … for a 50# dog they say 1/2 ounce per 15 lbs body weight mixed with a bowl of water. i prefer (distilled) but any will do . after a hard workout . and only use the kind with no flavor (original ).. works pretty good
