I don’t think dogs can process sugars very well. I agree, your best bet is water.

August 15, 2005 at 7:31 pm #9279The salt in the gatorade will do your dog more harm than good. There was an article on this in Pointing Dog Journal not long ago. I’ll try and find that and see what they recommended.

August 15, 2005 at 7:40 pm #9280Gotya..I figured there would be something wrong with it or theyd already have a sportsdrink for dogs haha. Being an 80lb. lab bustin through cattails gets tough so I figured id see if I could give him little more of an edge. I spose well stick to our daily running and water.

Water is the secret ingredient in sports drinks and canned dog food.
Gosh, I finally found a place to use that statement, thanks for the forum.blufloydPosts: 698August 15, 2005 at 9:32 pm #378385And mostly water is all anything needs if eating properly.

They also have several other types of drinks that replenish what they need too, I will get the links and post them as soon as I find them again. I saw these products at game fair and havent done the research yet. Sugar during the day isnt harmful to them, My chessie happens to burn through he sugar very fast especially on hot days and If I dont give her a little honey now and then she’ll have what looks like a seizure. The vet said it will do them no harm.

August 16, 2005 at 1:33 am #9287I was handed a flyer at game fair on Sat., it was a gatorade type drink for dogs. Can’t even remember what it was called. I think I’ll stick with water, it’s been working this far.

August 16, 2005 at 2:01 am #9288Rehydrate http://www.rehydratetabs.com this was the gaterade style drink which I dont no much about.
Tech mix (k-9 restart) (k-9 blue lite) http://www.techmixinc.com
There are two differnt products here a restart which is used in the morning (not all the time) to get sore muscles lossened up and help them feel energized again. It has calcium in it as well as many others (carbs. protiens and electrolytes are just some). its not too expensive I think the 4lb. bucket was 25.00 for the blue lite and 12.00 for 2 lbs. of the restart. the bluelite was more of the gaterade style but had sugar in it as well as calcium which interest me. I may give it a shot this year as its not too expensive. Like I said though my dog burns alot of sugar fast so I already use honey and if I can replace that and get in one step means more hunting time.
I will run these products by my vet and a few trainers I no to see if its worth it or not.August 16, 2005 at 2:01 am #378435Rehydrate http://www.rehydratetabs.com this was the gaterade style drink which I dont no much about.

It has all the electrolytes and minerals that an animal would burn through during a hunt. Check with the vet first but I’m willing to bet that since you can give it to dehydrated tots it would work well for a hard-hunting dog as well.

Some thing your hiding here jamesAugust 24, 2005 at 12:52 pm #9341That is a good suggestion James. I never thought about that but adding it to their water would be very beneficial I bet.

August 24, 2005 at 1:05 pm #9342I’d stay away from anything that has sodium in it. Dogs and sodium don’t mix too well. Frankly water is the best and you really have little to gain by using these so called performance drinks. I don’t know if pedialyte has sodium in it but if it does I’d stay away. Just make sure you have a bottle of water with a squirt top with. Squirt some in the corner of it’s mouth and let it drink it down. Aside from the helpful effect of the water your dog will also check in more often for a drink so you are kind of training it to stick around and be more dependent on you.

August 24, 2005 at 1:49 pm #9343I called the vet and he was totally on the same page as Clark, water is best. sodium makes dogs retain water not allowing them to cool down by panting since dogs cant sweat it is a fast way to melt your dog down. I call madison back a minimum on every 30 min for a splash and go in hot weather “over 50 deg” its kind of funny she knows its time for a drink when I call her back she comes in I put the bottle in the corner of her mouth give her a squirt and off she goes hardly stopping. remember to bring lots of water during pre season conditioning too.
later, Corey
