I need some advice about my dog. He is a black lab/golden retreiver. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. about 3 or 4 weeks after i got him he was on the dock and he fell off. ever since he has been scared of the water. i mean not scared TERRIFIED (sp) he wont even hardly get close to his water dish without whimpering. he is now 8 months old and he still does it. my question is…. How do i get him used to the water without him killing me trying to get out?

February 14, 2005 at 7:43 pm #5727Take your time to slowly get him back to the water. It will probably take some time now. They are water dogs so eventually he will come around. After you notice he has confidence you, try going in the water first. By him seeing you in there might help. You are like a parent him now. He might just go out with one paw, then two…eventually he will go in again. It will probably be only on his terms. Bring him around water often. He might not always go in but start by letting him see it isn’t bad.

February 14, 2005 at 11:24 pm #5732My GSP was scared of the water when she was a pup, here’s what I did to cure her. I hooked up with another guy who had a dog that was crazy about the water, just loved to retrieve in water. We took the dogs out to a pond for some retrieving, I took my dogs retrieving dummy and tossed it into the pond for the other dog to retive, at the same time holding on to the collar of my dog. That was all it took I had all I could do to hold on to her that was her dummy and she wanted it bad. The next retrieve we let both dogs go and she dove in like a rocket there was no way she was going to let the other dog make that retrieve.

April 7, 2005 at 4:36 am #6207I agree Steve and congratulate Roosterslayer on the great pic!!! I had to look at the thread as one of my friends labs was put down today. It was a tough day for me and I am sure an even tougher one for him. It just another great doggie waiting for us at the Rainbow Inn. Torky is on the left and his black, Ally was the one he put down. That pic was from our ND trek this year. It was a happier time.
