I had to put my Mastiff down a couple years ago. He was a very special dog, one that comes around once in a lifetime.
My Dad died last October, on my birthday.
I cried more when I put “The Senator” down.
Yes, dogs are a big deal in my life. I could never live without a dog.
Making way too big a deal out of it. They were not hurting the dog. They had trained the dog to do what they were doing, and at that moment, the dog changed its mind. They had people in the water to catch him at the end in case something unexpected happened, which did.
Not that I’m a Leo fan, but ask DiCaprio how it went filming The Revenant. He went through more for a movie.

I get what the Peta people are griping about, but in the end, its a dog who I feel trainers had way more connection than I ever would.

I love animals but they are still animals. I have pets and have always had pets. Fun when there here but you always move on when their gone.
Well now that I see peta was involved. The nuts from aspca might as well become nuts on this also. Then we would have two domestic terrorist groups involved.
LOCAL HUMANE SHELTERS are good in rural America where I still live, and I support them.
Regardless of their methods who wants to watch a movie where not only does the dog die but it dies multiple times?

Give up Personal Freedom? A dog doesn’t turn you into a communist…you still enjoy all the freedom America has to offer. Associated Problems? I think you are confusing a dog with a child…
Not only that, but damn it is therapeutic coming home to dogs who act like you are the greatest thing in the world and they thought they’d never see you again.
I think if I never had dogs, I’d probably be looking at an early grave.

Couldn’t imagine my life without my lab! Yes, it takes a bit of time. Traveling with family can be a little of a pain sometimes, but it’s always worked. Visiting the in-laws is also a challenge (M-I-L is almost deathly allergic to dogs), so the dog hangs out in the garage all day and then I get excuses to spend lots of time outside!
If I get long days at work our we end up taking a day trip somewhere, I often feel bad for him being outside in his kennel from say 6:30am-10:00pm, but guess what, he instantly forgets all about the long lonesome day and is excited when I get home.

Dogs have definitely changed our life. We are movers and shakers but can rarely leave for weekends away because of dogs. No last minute trips. No new adventures.
Traveling has about ceased unless we do it individually with friends instead of couples. Thankfully the cabin takes up the slack and gets us up north often.
Dogs definitely dictate your lifestyle. Two dogs like we have, even more.
A video clip really depicts a dogs life…I see nothing in that video that was necessarily “cruel”. The dog was trained to do a task and it wasn’t doing it, they didn’t beat the thing…They also came running to its rescue when it was in “danger”.
There are days where my GSP makes me want to rip my own hair out. If they grabbed a 12 second clip of me yelling at him with some death metal music setting the ambiance, people would go nuts. They wouldn’t see him laying in my lap under a blanket 2 minutes later because they would be too busy having a knee jerk reaction…My dog has a better life than I and i’m A-ok with that. I provide for him, he listens to me 95% of the time. I couldn’t imagine a day without owning a pup.

i love our lab but they definitely restrict you on what you are able to do unless you are well funded. we have 2 cats that live in the garage and are 95% outside cats and i can leave a weeks worth of food and water and they’ll be fine. hell i can leave the chickens alone for 2-3 weeks.
we can leave the dog for the weekend. it has a long outside run that goes into the garage. it has a timed feeder and all the water it can drink. but anything beyond that is an absolute pain.
that being said, the dog is now apart of our family but my wife an i are last minute vacationers. i imagine that once the kids are gone (my youngest is 6) and this dog is gone (she’s 2) we might possibly be done with dogs.

Do what we did. Have your MIL move in and let her watch them on the weekends! 
I guess to that point they do restrict our freedoms somewhat as Don said. We get out a lot on weekends exploring, but we try and restrict ourselves to 8 hours. I’d like to take our dogs with us more often and we do try getting them out. The problem is at 14 years old, Tuffy needs to be accommodated. We bought a doggie stroller for him. The only problem is, yes, he loves riding in it and being pushed around, but when he has to do his business he tries jumping out without notice.
I love bringing them along for overnighters.

Im a dog guy so I will probably always have one but we did go a couple years between dog 1 and dog 2 and that’s when I realized what we were missing.
And how much less cleaning the house needed. Only reason we went so long is the pain of losing dog 1.
We dont have immediate family nearby so we kennel for special events. Only problem with that is 2 dogs and the dogs accommodations end up being as expensive, if not more, than our own. Right now we wont kennel our oldest ever again as she is too fragile so we are even more restricted but used to it and very happy. There’s a lot to be said about two dogs that are always happy to see you.

Funny that yesterday evening I discovered that “A Dog’s Purpose” is the title of the movie with the “scandal” I have loosely heard about. I knew we were discussing that, but I thought Nick was questioning a dog’s purpose. LOL
