Does this math seem correct?

I have a new calendar at work. It’s from the Arbor Day Foundation. On the bottom of January page it says:”Experts estimate that 135 plant, animal, and insect species are lost each day to rain forest deforestation”
I estimated that deforestation has been going on in the Amazon since the 40’s or 50’s but for a base number I calculated from 1990. I took 135 x 365 x 30 years. Based on experts from the arbor day Foundation in that time we have lost 1,478,250 plants, animals and insects species.
Call me crazy but those numbers seem a tad bit out of line?

I would guess that it means the different species are affected. I’m with you, that it doesn’t seem like that many species would be going extinct.

Scientists estimate that there are more than 50 million different species of invertebrates living in rainforests. One scientist found 50 different species of ants on a single tree in Peru! You would probably only need a few hours of poking around in a rainforest to find an insect unknown to science. You could even name it after yourself!

Researchers found 381 new species during a two-year study in the Amazon region …

Sounds like their DNR needs a better stocking program

I think you need a calendar that doesn’t mess with your mind.

Part of the problem might be that you’re still using a paper calendar. devil

How do they know how many are MAYBE being lost if they don`t know how many there are?????

How about straight up math? You have a room of 23 people, everyone says their birthday, not the year, just month and day-what are the odds of a match?

Another: you have a piece of paper that is 12×18”-now you want paper that is 2x(twice ) that size, how big?

Your math is correct. Can’t vouch for the assumptions…

    1 in 23.
Did this in math class in high school. Had 30 kids in class. Teacher said we would have at least 1 match. Class didn’t believe the teacher. We had 2 matches in the 1st 21 kids. Shocks me to this day.

    Super-yes
Most would look at 365 days 23 people and figure the percentage that way. NO< NO
Big is right on the other one, most would double both numbers, that doubling gets you 4x the area.
Speaking of area, lets say you have a goat tied to a pole on a 10′ chain, he goes around that pole eating grass. You want him to eat 2x as much grass-how much do you increase the chain by?

You mean to tell me a 24″ pizza isn’t twice as big as a 12″ pizza shock jester

It’s why if you ever get lost in the woods, your rescuers want you to stay put. Every step you take from where you were supposed to be greatly increases the search area.

About 4 times the size on my math. Ok enough math class for the day.

So for the Birthday one, I assume the matches were around 9/9 ?

4.44, So you don’t just 2x the chain? birthday thing is counterintuitive, lots things in this world are, trust those science people a little more-not blindly though. My 2 cents.
