Docking, how to tie off.

Use the cleat hitch knot to tie off your boat to a dock cleat.

Google cleat hitch knot if you don’t know what it is. I always use 3 hitches for redundancy.

Old ropes and new ropes will not slip free if tied properly.

Had to toss my anchor on another run away house boat yesterday.

    Good luck fishing.

Any storage areas flood enough to float it? Off the blocks?

You’ll only need to swim after your boat once in cold water to remember every time. I don’t even let people “hold my boat” at the dock… The rope won’t fail-you might though. )

This event Just sparked the need for a reminder for all you boaters. I’m surprised how many people I fish with do not know how to tie off to a cleat.

The house boat above, the two ropes broke (according to marina manager). Wind and current will do that to old rotted ropes.

More so on days like tomorrow with wind gusts predicted at 50 mph.

Main reason I invested in a talon. Like you, I’m by myself on the river and usually launching without a dock. Even with, I put the talon down as an extra precaution. Never had to swim after the boat yet.

Expensive piece of hardware but worth it I’m my opinion.

I’ll bet that is nice when there isn’t a dock! How well does the talon work on pavement or cement?

A properly tied cleat hitch doesn’t need redundancy, let alone three sets doah

The whole point of the knot is that’s is fast, simple, secure and very fast to untie in an emergency.

Also any boater worth their salt can tie a bowline with their eyes closed and hitch a post (clove hitch or mooring hitch) waytogo

If you really want people to scratch their head, after you tie off with the cleat hitch coil the remaining rope.

I use an overhand loop knot, pull it thru the middle of the cleat, return the loop over the wings, and pull tight. It’s simple and fool proof even after a few Coronas.

Bingo! I was waiting to see if anyone else used that “foolproof” method.

Just what I do too, you can tie the loop knot ahead of time when you’re sober. smirk

I carry an assortment of ropes in different lengths in the boat with loops on each end. Loop one end over the dock pole, and pull the other end loop through the cleat and then over the wings…voilà!

Works great whether you’ve had Coronas or Fultons, Surly’s or Summits too. toast

    LOL!!!

About 20-25 yrs ago, I docked in a Lake Superior harbor, secured my boat with cleat hitches and left my line ends bunched up in piles. Immediately, an old salt stepped in, coiled my tag ends just like that and told me: “Take care of your docklines, kid, and you won’t look like a damned hack.”

Been doing that ever since……cuz my momma didn’t raise no hack. rotflol

In case people are wondering why you would do that, I was told that the idea was that it makes the rope lay flat so if it is stepped on, it’s less likely to trip someone or tangle on their foot.

Or so I was told. There may be other reasons.

That works just fine as a fixed knot, as does a bowline, but what do you do on the other end?

The cleat hitch is infinity adjustable so you always have the perfect amount of rope.

Side note: I’ve never coiled my excess rope. That’s only for blow boats jester Fisherman are exempt )
