Do I need an inline fuse for helix 5?

    Hey all,
I just ordered the transducer and power cable for my helix 5 to use on the ice. My question is about fuses and the battery power source. On my boat, I ran the power cable through the fuse panel on the dash. I am wondering if
I need to use an inline fuse for use on the ice, or if I can just connect it to the battery? Thanks for the help!

It’s cheap insurance, for 5$ to protect a 500$ unit

That is an excellent point! I think I will get an inline fuse holder. Thanks for the response.

A fuse is really unnecessary if you’re using a standard flasher battery.

More so because that battery gets banged around and can short out more easy then a battery strapped in a battery box.

I have 3A inline fuses on all of my Helix 5 power cables. I have one hardwired to my truck, ATV and genz box. I’ve yet to pop one, but it’s cheap insurance.

Does Humminbird put a fuse on their own fully set up Ice Packs? No.

There’s no need for a fuse with that little battery.

Truck, atv, and boat batteries are actually capable of putting out enough current to damage a Helix unit and are also powering a starter motor. A little 12v 10ah SLA battery simply can’t put out enough current to damage your unit, a fuse is not needed.

I was simply stating how mine is setup…I’m sorry what I do has prompted you enough to make sure I read your post, which I did. Have I ever seen anything bad happen? no. But it doesn’t mean it cant…

Take your flasher battery and put a wrench across the terminals, see what happens.

So the fuse is to protect the battery then, because a short from a 12v SLA isn’t going to harm the Helix. Could start a little fire and cause damage I suppose. But then Vex, Marcum, and Bird should be putting fuses on all their ice packs right?

Nothing personal Eagle and my post wasn’t directed at you, sorry if it came off that way…. just using you’re post as an example why fuses are used in other setups. And you’re 100% right, you can set it up however you please – I wasn’t trying to convince you otherwise.
