That guy must be huge (DNR tech), the fish doesn’t look anywhere near 17 lbs to me.
This was an 18 lbs. carp.

My experience with hand held spring scales is not good. These can be affected by a lot of outside factors. Air temp being one of them.
Nice fish!

December 23, 2015 at 11:03 am #158677332.3″ though. That’s a big walleye, no matter what it weighed.
December 23, 2015 at 11:07 am #1586774If that fish weighs 17 plus pounds I would like them to measure something for me!
My PB is a 10.5 lb 31.5″ and this one doesn’t look that much bigger, length looks about right. Pictures can be deceiving but he is holding that fish outward. I would guess closer to 12 than 17.

Always going to be doubters mostly due to jealously…What possible reason would they have to lie? It’s a 32.5″ fish and it weighed 17.5lbs. Why can’t it just be what it is and be a cool story…RR
December 23, 2015 at 12:51 pm #1586820RR, not hating, but those of us that have actually caught big fish, it just doesn’t look right.

Well those of us that have actually caught big fish, and looked at many different pictures of them realize how the fish is presented in a photo can have a drastic impact on how big (or small) it looks. And now thanks to Ralph I have TSwift stuck in my head!!!
blankPosts: 1776December 23, 2015 at 1:10 pm #1586823Not jealousy, but it just doesn’t add up based on the length and the many different weight by length calculations. For comparison, the MN state record was 17lbs 8oz, 35.75″ length, and 21.25″ girth.
Here are pictures of that state record.

Thanks for posting a cool story Dave. Too bad so many pro’s who know how big a fish in in a picture have to come out of the wood work to spoil a neat story…RR

That picture is a perfect example of how you can’t tell squat from a picture. The 35 inch fish looks more like 26 or 27. Probably due to its impressive girth, but you really can’t tell anything from a picture, and you can’t really trust a spring scale either. I don’t think it goes 17 pounds, but that’s just an opinion. Guess somebody has to go catch it and get an accurate weight.
December 23, 2015 at 3:20 pm #1586859We have a 100 acre+ lake outside of Syracuse NY. Funny a number of years ago a guy got a ~ 14 pound walleye there. The lake is not a producer, but it goes to show you that these small deep lakes can at times surprise you.
BTW the DNR wasn’t fishing so why the heck would they make up a story about a whopper?

“make up a story” might be a little harsh, it appears to have happened. Why they would have exaggerated the story is up to anyone’s guess.
December 23, 2015 at 4:11 pm #1586878If you think anybody will ever stop 2nd guessing your weights, just post a pic of a catfish once. You can put it on a digital scale, and every one of those guys will tell you it was wrong. 32 inches is big no matter where you go, and for the record, I don’t trust spring scales either. That doesn’t mean they were lying.
And, good luck catching that fish, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint a fish like that in 380 feet of water.
December 23, 2015 at 4:49 pm #1586892Whoa guys !!! Really ???
It’s just information. ….

riverrunsInactivePosts: 2218December 23, 2015 at 7:05 pm #1586911I once caught a fish so big it wouldn’t fit in the picture. I had to take two pictures one of the front half one of the back half. Now that’s big!
