DNR crackdown on Bass Tourneys this summer.

This lake will have half a dozen or more tourneys on it this summer.
I see one permit has been issued for a tourney on the lake.
The rest of the tourneys will be under 25 boats.
However look at the access. It won’t take many to fill all the parking spots.
I fished this particular lake last June. As I said it had 2 tourneys going on at the same time. One bass tourney and one walleye tourney.
The only other access on the lane is a private one.

the wanna be kvd super star Saturday crews. From what I see those guys think they own the lakes and launches.

Such an accurate statement. I was a fishing the lake my cabin is on, which I do almost every weekend, saw a small mouth on a bed, meanwhile I noticed a bass guy coming at me hot, I caught the smallie, let it go and the dude screamed at me for catching HIS fish. I told him, maybe if you looked around you’d see there are 20 other beds within 250′ feet, but maybe you can’t see over those 15″ graphs going 65mph across the lake. He slammed the throttle and took off. Damn Tool.

I am with you about sticking spawning fish in a livewell too. I do not support that at all. It should be immediate catch and release at this time to reduce the affect on spawning as much as possible.

I think it should be 100% Catch/Release for every tournament, regardless of the time of year. We are at the age now that everyone has a phone, and there are apps that basically can log any documentation you needs during the tournament.

No argument here. That subject has come up here more than once too.

I will add, 100% catch and release does open things up for cheaters, but as we’ve found out so do live weigh ins.

If weight is an issue, just go straight to length. Pretty tough to cheat, when using a certified ruler.

I’m sure some people will complain about length as well, likely bass guys, ) . But, change happens and we all have to adapt from time to time.

I know at least 3 time I went to clearwater lake last summer only to find the whole black pool landing full if Boat trailers ( Almost all bass boat trailers ) this was both the lower landing and the overflow one a little ways away. All 3 times I looked at the DNR website to see if any tourneys were going to be at Clearwater that day. I know there was at least 50 boats total. Drove by the other ( Main landing ) on the way to a different local lake. Its also was rather full including the overflow lot there. This was around 5:30 in the morning. Like I have said, I’m not against tourneys at all. I just think there needs to be more control of them. Far to many of them are either just ignoring the rules or are structuring them in a way to avoids the rules. Both are not good for anyone. I think I’m going to take several peoples advise and this summer if I find a tourney being held on a lake and its not listed on the DNR website I’m going to call the local CO for the area and have them there at the landing at the weigh in times and see if they are playing by the rules. I feel bad that something like this is needed but like other here have said. Do something about it.

With time stamp apps today I don’t see how cheating would be any easier for the catch and release tourneys. Run them the same way the AIM series does. Length converted to lbs.
There are apps that will stamp the time location etc.

    Ahhhh tournaments…

    Hard pass.

Reason #246 while fishing during the week is really the only way to go. Starting in June Friday-Sunday the fishing boat is parked and the tritoon is on an island or meandering up the channel watching the crazies.

Pretty tough to do when a guy works all day. I seem to do just fine fishing on the weekends. These run ins are not a everyday all day event

    This is a great thread.

I had mentioned in a previous post with the link to the early season bass survey, that I am a new member to the DNR Bass Work Group. During the March meeting, my first to attend, there was a lot of discussion relating to bass tournaments and what steps the work group might suggest to the DNR in regards to the overcrowding at lakes/accesses.

The current effort for this year is to encourage tournament organizers to list their tournaments on an online forum to reduce tournament organizers doubling up on a given lake. The hope is that organizers will police themselves versus the DNR having to take a more active role.

There are three different forums that I am aware of for organizers to list their tournaments. Not sure how this will play out as I think there should be a single forum and maybe sponsored by the DNR as the DNR already has the permitted forum.

The next bass work group meeting is in August and all the comments here are good back ground for my input to the work group at this next meeting.

Ford guy’s post right before yours is a great example.

Ford guys post is not a tourney problem, it’s a parking problem. I’m all for “cracking down” on cars/trucks parking in designated trailer parking spots. Love to see these Dbags get ticked and towed ! It is a huge problem.

    -J.

It was a tourney problem. They had over 75 boats and did not most likely have a permit. They also took up more than 50% of the parking spots at the landings. Some landings I fish are posted as boat trailer only parking, other just say parking for landing use only. Those that say landing use only don’t need to have a trailer to park there. Some do have a mix. some marked as boat trailer only parking and some spaces say for landing use only. Sometimes there is someone meeting a guy with a boat at a landing. They need someplace to park their auto as well.

If you go on the mn dnr website you can see all of the tournaments that have permits. The kayak tournament had a permit.

Seeing multiple cars without trailers taking up an entire trailer spots is very frustrating at busy ramps. You would think they could at least figure out that two cars fit into one spot.

If there is a problem with the current regs, change the regs!

Bass tournaments aren’t going away and probably aren’t going to be less often. Bass fishing is where the future of fishing is. It’s where the money is. I know people in this state don’t want to hear it, but it’s true.

Once again I said I have nothing against bass tourneys. Just think there needs to be some control of it. Just curious – Does the tourneys you fish pull the proper permits? I’m going to take a guess here and say they have more than a 25.00 entry fee to those tourneys. So according to the DNR regulations they need to pull permits and inform the sheriff of the event.

The tournament series I have fished and fish don’t need permits because they are $25 entry fee and one is 24 boats and the other is 12. The bigger ones I’ve fished and know of, pull permits. There is one large series that I know doesn’t but I don’t fish it and most guys I know also don’t fish it.
