My buddy and I are looking at planning a DIY antelope hunt in wyoming for next summer. We are looking at Wyoming because of the budget priced $40 doe and fawn tags. However, due to college we are limited to areas that have seasons opening in August. I have been doing some research on WY Game and Fish website, but would appreciate any advice on hunt areas or any other kinds of advice people have on doing this kind of hunt.

Thanks in advance for any help

DO NOT BUY THE PAPER BLM MAPS Get a quality hand held gps and buy the blm card. It is a world of difference.

I’m in Wyoming at least every other year and hunt public land. Make sure you know what a rattle sounds like if your going to go in Aug. Also, locate a place to get dry ice in advance. After about 9 in the morning, it gets HOT. Drink at least twice as much water as you think you should.

In August I’m guessing you’ll mainly hunt water holes however, take advantage of their poor low light vision with some spot/stalking. Unlike whitetails, my experience is they don’t move at night. If you spot some in the evening towards dark, they will likely be in the same place in the morning. Put them to bed ie turkeys and plan a stalk in the dark the next morning. In the dark or low light it’s not too tough to get into 75-100 yds of them. Get some good knee pads and leather gloves and plan to spend significant time on hands and knees if you’re up for spot/stalking. They are incredibly curious, I wouldn’t be surprised if a doe decoy would draw them into range if done properly. Listen to Randy, drink LOTS of water and then drink some more. Good luck.

I did it last year for the first time. Hunted just outside Douglas. I payed a trespass fee to hunt private ranch. There was a lot of goats there. We both tagged out second morning spot an stalks. We went last week in August. It was cold 30s at night 60s during the day so they weren’t hitting water holes often.

First day I sat over a water whole dark to dark had a couple come in but neither bucks were very big.
