Dishwasher shopping

Our household is in need of a new dishwasher. Any suggestions to look for? Brands or options that we should stay away from would be very helpful as well. We live the La Crosse, WI area, so if anyone as references to a good place to shop, that would be appreciated as well. We could hit all of the Big Box stores, but it seems as though their knowledgable staff tends to be lacking.

    TIA,

We have a GE Profile in our home. When it comes time to replace it, I will not buy another GE. For a supposed higher-end appliance, the $350 Kenmore we had in our old home did a better job of cleaning. The GE is way quieter, though, which is nice.

My mom and dad put in a new Whirpool last year. It’s quiet, and they’ve been really happy with it.

We just got all new LG appliances. The LG SS dishwashers do a great job, are super quiet, and look good too.

Totally agree, big box = worthless when it comes to determining what you want/need.

Dedicated appliance stores are a much better source because in many cases they service what they sell, so they are going to be in a position to know what the problem child units are and steer you away toward better choices.an

I worked for an appliance retailer back in college and the sales guys always said there are two areas where you want to overbuy. Washing machines and dishwashers. If you look at the appliances in your house that take an almost daily beating, these two machines are the heavy lifters in most homes.

Also, water quality in your home has a huge impact on DW performance. A DW is only as good as your water quality, if you have hard water, iron, etc, then any machine is going to be sub-optimal compared to the household that has better water.

We have an automatic dishwasher at our place.
When dinner is over, I wash the dishes.
    It’s automatic.

My interior isn’t stainless steel though.

We got a bosch a couple years ago, it does the job its supposed to do. We did get the stainless interior too. I’m 99% sure we bought it from Midwest TV and Appliance over by Valley View.

We are also shopping for a new dishwasher. Several of the stores advised us to wait if we could as we would start to see Black Friday prices by the 2nd weekend of November. Many would be marked down a couple hundred dollars.

I agree with Grouse. My last several appliances have come from Warner Stellion and we have constantly been impressed with their employees knowledge and helpfulness.

Wife works at Lowe’s and she always says stay away from GE, and go Bosch on dishwashers. I’d ask your sales person what brand the get the most complaints on. But Bosch is the boss

I just bought an entire kitchen full of appliances from WS. We went with a Bosch dishwasher based on reviews from several people and our sales man. The sales guy we dealt with was very knowledgeable. He had nothing but good things to say about Bosch dishwashers. However his recommendation, if we wanted the best, was Miele. He stated he’s never seen one returned. On thing he did say was the electronics/circuit boards are the typical issues with dishwashers. And what kills electronics…water and heat. Both are what dishwashers deal with. Needless to say we got the 5 year warranty, mainly based on the bad experience with our current Kitchenaid.

Yep, top notch. One time they actually steered me to a big box store for a dishwasher they would have sold me due to a better price. After that experience we went back and purchased a washer dryer set and that transaction was great.

Do not buy a Samsung, they do not dry for what. Some have built in chopper for food particles and the bosch only has a strainer. First big question is do you rinse your dishes good before putting in the dishwasher or not. If you rinse good the strainer is the way to go with a bosch or whatever.

However his recommendation, if we wanted the best, was Miele.

We’ve got two large, industrial Mieles at work. Meile makes a top-of-the-line washer, but from what I hear, you’ll pay for it, and repairs are not cheap, either.

Being the OP is down in La Crosse, I’d want to make damn sure there was a LOCAL service tech for Miele before I’d look into them. Trying to get somebody to run out from the Cities on what often could involve multiple trips would be a real PITA.

Just like the other prosumer brands like Viking, Subzero, Wolf, etc, not just anyone can service these things and unless you don’t mind being without an appliance for a month or so, you’d want to know where your service would come from before buying.

The circuit boards and the computer brainbox seems to be as someone else said, the big issue with dishwashers. Personally, we have Fridgidaire commercial series and the DW is on its second brainbox in less than 10 years. They seem to go out about ever 4 years. My parents had the same experience with GE.

I’ve dealt with appliance installs for as long as I have building homes and lower levels (feels like dinosaurs were still around). Over time, brands have come up, produced well, then quality goes to crap. Not everyone has the open ended budget to buy the best – I know and realize that. Lamber, Viking,….all will run in the thousands. They build a quality product and the price is what it is. Just keep in mind that as you look at Bosch, LG, Maytag….. they ALL do reverse engineering to stay at a price point. To be competitive at $549.99, the product is continually cheapened up until it matches the profit margin at that price. So if you are set at a particular budget, make sure you compare the components in how it is made. Especially if you are looking at very comparable makes and one is $75-$100 less, there is a reason why!

Make sure you get a good installer. Surprising how many insurance jobs we get BC of a poor install on the DW, and/or fridge line.
