I’m onboard with what Matt said specifically about drinking your calories. I do not follow a strict workout routine or have gym memberships, fitness apps, etc. In exchange for that I do not consume soda whatsoever. I also do not do energy drinks, sugary juices, lemonades, etc and they are never in the house. Coffee with a tiny bit of creamer, water, and the occasional glass of 1% milk are the extent of my liquid intakes. Even in the summer working outside on 90+ degree days I rarely consume Gatorade/Powerade as they’re as sugary as some sodas and don’t really quench my thirst. I do consume a fair amount of beer and whiskey, but it’s not nightly and I’m not giving it up either!
I rarely eat a big breakfast due to time constraints. I’m more of a granola bar and 2 cups of coffee person. I’ll eat an average size lunch in the Fall-Spring months when I am working inside, and eat only the smallest lunch of fruit and some granola/yogurt during the summer when I’m working in the intense heat.
I fluctuate seasonally within a range of 10-12lbs every year since I graduated college (heavier fall and winter, lighter spring and summer). I’m not in the shape I was when I competed in 4 sports and had no body fat whatsoever, but I still try to keep things in-check by staying active. I’ll easily walk a couple miles in an ice fishing outing to some backwater sloughs that rarely see other anglers. I gladly will physically shovel snow. I clear a lot of brush and cut trees on weekends running chainsaws for hours on end. My second job in the summer involves tons of lifting, climbing, and carrying at the local lumberyard in extreme heat. A couple hundred sheets of sheetrock into a house is quite the workout that many people wouldn’t ever do. So is putting together house packages of lumber by hand.
My family history and genetics health wise have plenty of issues that I will do my part to avoid and leave the rest to the man upstairs. However, I do not have even an hour of my day to give up to some strict fitness regimen or data entry into apps. For me, it’s all about balance.
