Drinking some Busch lattes that are orange. Thats definitely enough to throw in the fruit category for my daily diet.

Hey, may also help a guy lose weight by inducing vomiting, too!

Matt nailed it….weight loss for the majority of people is moreso about diet. Exercise is an important part and critical to overall health but exercise is not what is taking the weight off. I have been an exercise junky for years….not uncommon for me to average 20 miles of running and over 50 miles a week on the bike. My weight doesn’t fluctuate until I change my eating habits.

One thing that really helped me with eating was watching my liquids intake. I was told to never drink your calories. Most of the calories taken in from liquids are empty and just pile on the weight. Pop, beer, energy drinks, certain coffees, juices should be avoided where possible. Most people can remove 400-500 calories a day by changing their liquid intakes. Beer has always been a struggle for me.

The app suggestions are also good but I’d suggest a good fitness watch that you wear all the time. Set daily goals for exercise, steps, calorie burn, etc. Seeing the reminder all the time helps keep you accountable and minimizes the really bad days where you let your eating and exercise fall to the wayside.

interesting how diet programs work. i guess its really more how the human body/psyche works. yesterday i wanted NO PART of a workout and was feeling down about the food i was eating. I toughed it out and did the workout anyway and ate appropriately. an hour later i was so glad i did and felt the confidence boost that comes along with sticking to your goals and showing discipline. Today im back in the saddle and feeling positive and looking forward to tonight’s workout. Really helps to have a partner there (my wife) to help motivate you to get off your arse when you arent feeling it

Thanks for all the feedback. This is a good thread to read through for advice and really just some support knowing we all have goals we work toward with some successes and some setbacks

I’m onboard with what Matt said specifically about drinking your calories. I do not follow a strict workout routine or have gym memberships, fitness apps, etc. In exchange for that I do not consume soda whatsoever. I also do not do energy drinks, sugary juices, lemonades, etc and they are never in the house. Coffee with a tiny bit of creamer, water, and the occasional glass of 1% milk are the extent of my liquid intakes. Even in the summer working outside on 90+ degree days I rarely consume Gatorade/Powerade as they’re as sugary as some sodas and don’t really quench my thirst. I do consume a fair amount of beer and whiskey, but it’s not nightly and I’m not giving it up either!

I rarely eat a big breakfast due to time constraints. I’m more of a granola bar and 2 cups of coffee person. I’ll eat an average size lunch in the Fall-Spring months when I am working inside, and eat only the smallest lunch of fruit and some granola/yogurt during the summer when I’m working in the intense heat.

I fluctuate seasonally within a range of 10-12lbs every year since I graduated college (heavier fall and winter, lighter spring and summer). I’m not in the shape I was when I competed in 4 sports and had no body fat whatsoever, but I still try to keep things in-check by staying active. I’ll easily walk a couple miles in an ice fishing outing to some backwater sloughs that rarely see other anglers. I gladly will physically shovel snow. I clear a lot of brush and cut trees on weekends running chainsaws for hours on end. My second job in the summer involves tons of lifting, climbing, and carrying at the local lumberyard in extreme heat. A couple hundred sheets of sheetrock into a house is quite the workout that many people wouldn’t ever do. So is putting together house packages of lumber by hand.

My family history and genetics health wise have plenty of issues that I will do my part to avoid and leave the rest to the man upstairs. However, I do not have even an hour of my day to give up to some strict fitness regimen or data entry into apps. For me, it’s all about balance.

On the subject of drinking your calories, fruit juice is basically an uncarbonated soda and should always be treated that way. The actual fruit often times has a lot of micronutrients and fiber. The fiber makes you full and you miss out if you are drinking juice. When I let my kids have juice I look at it like giving them a can’t bar. It’s a rare treat, not part of their diet.

I avoid going into gas stations if at all possible. I might get a coffee with cream on a trip but never buy any other food or beverage. Too often people go to the gas station just to buy a beverage.

As many have said before it’s a lifestyle change, not a diet.

I buy a beverage at the gas station every day. Have for many years.

I drink mostly light beer so I consider that always being on a diet 😆
