I don’t crap every day so weighing every day can be misleading. I weigh once a week on the same day. I’m down 7 pounds in 2 weeks.

I also drove a lot. I found that I would only eat “cheetos” when in my vehicle. I did this in place of smoking or drinking pop. Hardest part was not eating cheetos when out of vehicle.

All of your sugary caffeinated drinks will make you feel worse and more tired. Try water.

If you need caffeine drink black coffee.

My recent weight loss even though I wasn’t trying made me want to put some more thoughts here. In my hundreds of hours of research on acid reflux cures, I’ve come across a couple diets that seem to have some very significant benefits. Also, until now, I’d only heard that saturated fats were not as bad as they’ve been portrayed over the past several decades. I do believe my own weight loss proves it.

Fat, more specifically saturated fat, is a vital macronutrient. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually very dangerous to replace saturated fat with carbs like grains which is rampant in the American diet and is likely the biggest contributing factor to obesity and heart disease.

There’s a lot of solid info out there that supports this. On my diet, I have replaced nearly all of the grains in my diet with meat and eggs. I’ve lost roughly 15% of my body weight and I’ve virtually stopped exercising. I feel better, better concentration, more energy, fewer illnesses. Yes I am mixing in more salads each day but I wouldn’t call it significant. After all, what do you feed a cow before they are slaughtered and for what purpose? Mammals clearly have an ability to eat a natural diet and not have to worry about getting fat.

I also discovered some information that suggests that your gut flora can play a massive role in your macronutrient absorption.

I could go on and on aimlessly about this but I am a firm believer that carbs are the single biggest factor for obesity.

I really like this channel on YouTube. I have taken time to fact check some of the studies he has posted and found them to be very factual.

It gives you a free pass to eat all the butter you want. How could you say no?

I’ve made it a habit to cook with butter and bacon grease as much as possible. It’s probably why we go through 1-2 lbs of bacon and almost 2 lbs of butter a week.

I’m as serious as a heart attack about all this stuff. Pun intended.

Congrats on dumping the smokes! That’s a huge step in saving your own life.

I’ve lost 37 pounds now but I’m not following a diet. I started by cutting out caffeinated drinks and soda. I have one cup of coffee in the morning, then no caffeine. I haven’t changed so much what I eat, but how much I eat….way smaller portions. I used to eat until I was full. Now I eat until I am not hungry….big difference. I’ve added two small eating times per day. I eat way more fresh fruit and fresh veggies. I’m not big on cauliflower or broccoli, or cabbage cooked, but I love each of them raw and eat some of each several times a week. Lots of water. Lots.

Realizing you need to shed some weight is a huge move in a positive direction. Making a conscious decision to do something to lose some pounds is huge too. You’ll have ups and downs so don’t let yourself get caught up in this but try to stay focused and short term loses and don’t worry about a long term goal.

I’m in a flat zone right now. I don’t lose but I don’t gain. I do what I have mentioned and realize that when the body is ready to shed more it’ll happen if I stick with what I have done all along. Summers coming and so is sweating while I work outside. Sweating is a great way to dump weight as long as you replace the water lost in a good way. I drink a water, then I work on a bottle of G2 to help replace lost minerals and elctrolytes, then back to water, then G2…..you get the idea.

You’re doing good stuff Crappie. Keep it up and again, congrats on shedding the smoke. Your body and family will love you for it!

I saw this story/video today. Good timing since some of you are probably worried about how you’re going to look in a bikini this summer.

If you’re worried how you’re going to look this summer just do what I do and buy one of those funland mirrors that makes you look tall and thin.
    Works for me anyway.

We’ve been doing keto for about 6 weeks. I dropped 10-13lbs. I’ve hit a wall now and the only thing that will help me drop more is exercise.

Although I’m not in this to lose weight, I have lost over 20 lbs and have been doing it since the start of the year. If you truly hit a wall, you might want to try intermittent fasting. It’s not as hard as it sounds. You’ll only notice some hunger for the first day or two. After that you don’t notice any hunger unless you are around food for any length of time. The longer you go without eating the better you feel. I mean better as in better than if you did eat breakfast and/or lunch.

As the guy in the What I’ve Learned channel explains, it’s the key to keeping your weight off after you’ve reached your goal.

Funny. I have been on a pork rind kick myself.
As far as dieting, your body will level out to the amount of food you eat. If you reduce intake you will lose weight quickly at first until you level off at the weight that matches your intake. If you want to go less than that you must further reduce your intake. I lost my weight just over two years ago and have maintained it by fundamentally changing my diet and creating a new normal. I still eat everything, just in moderation. Its still hard and I must be vigilant but the benefits have been great.

I just got done with a 4 month keato stint. Just stay with it there will weeks where you losing nothing but then weeks you lose 5 pounds. I averaged losing 10 pounds a month. Even though i am off the diet it did change how i will eat forever. Portion control is huge and before keato i could not control it.

side note is working out is not the best idea on keato. That is why i stopped your body needs more carbs then keato takes in in order to work out.

    huh?

Portion control is a huge problem for us. We always eat way over our necessary portions. It’s nice to be able to be gluttonous with pork and steak.

The pork rinds get me through the slight hunger I feel after dinner.

I am not 100% Keto dieting, but I am watching my carb intake and limiting it. We cut out rice and potatoes which as huge. I also am drinking more hard seltzers and less craft beer, which I think is huge.

What sucks is when you plateau. Still eating less and not what I want to eat but the weight loss stops.

Interesting topic and something I have been doing (so to speak) for the last 5 months.

I went through the divorce diet a year ago and lost 35 lbs (I don’t recommend this diet to anyone!). Went from 215 to 180. Around the first of the year I decided it was time to gain some weight back, this time looking to gain more muscle.

After a lot of research I focused on a few things:
    1) Calories – First step was to determine calories needed. Days I don’t work out I need roughly 2700 now (6’4″ 190 lbs). Days I work out I need 3050 just to maintain current weight which surprised me early on. I have used an app to track calories and weight over the past 5 months, this has helped me maintain my goals. It’s more work, sure, but was needed for what my goals were. It’s still pretty easy. The app tells me how much I can have for various meals, and adjusts as needed. I go over on some and less on others….I mainly focus on daily totals.

    2) Nutrients. My primary focus is getting enough protein while staying within my calorie numbers, and making sure I still get enough carbs/fat as well. I think I am usually shooting for around 30% protein, 35% fat, 35% carbs but that always varies. Protein goal is usually at least 150g, closer to 180 and try to have roughly 30-50 in each meal. I still need the carbs and fat and do not cut either of those out. The app I use provides all this info for you. This by nature tends to sway my food choices. I eat a lot of eggs/nuts/almonds/meat/peanut butter in order to do this and do watch my portions (will use a scale). Once you learn what you need portion wise it’s a lot easier deal with. I still eat a lot of food throughout the day, just focus on protein. I don’t eat a lot of junk food, and don’t drink soda either. That helps a lot. I do drink beer on weekends and will go over on calories…but I don’t sweat it.

    3) Meals – I am a little boring in that I eat the same thing every morning during the week, helps keep some consistency (yogurt/granola/peanut butter bread/milk). Lunch I am similar but do mix that up. Dinner always varies, but I try to do higher protien meals as often as I can. I often eat some right before bed as well just to get my calories in.

It all seems like a lot, but now it is almost second nature. I have slowly put on 10 lbs since the first of the year. If I had to cut weight, tracking calories like this would be very helpful as you can make small cuts and slowly lose the weight without starving yourself.

Weight is an interesting thing that a lot of times people make more complicated than it needs to be. It really is as simple as losing weight = burning more calories than you take in, gaining weight = taking in more calories than you burn. That said, is 100 calories of candy bars going to give your body the same result as 100 calories of broccoli or 100 calories of chicken? No.

I made it a goal this year to increase weight, didn’t really have a target weight in mind other than how I felt, functioned, and looked, and wanted to decrease body fat while increasing muscle. On January 1 I was 225, by mid-March I was 255 and have since maintained about 250. I can definitely say that right now I am a healthier 250 than 225.

A few years ago I dropped from 300 to 225 range, where I maintained for most of those years. Whether losing, maintaining, or gaining, a lot of my food intake has been the same. Avoid added sugar, eat everything in its most simple form, which means to avoid processed foods, fast foods, etc. General rule of thumb, if the label has more sugar than protein, then avoid it. I am big on eating a large quality breakfast, whether losing, maintaining, or gaining. And then eating something every 2-3 hours after. When losing or maintaining, smaller amounts each time I eat and avoiding any snack after supper. When gaining, larger amounts each time I eat while also focusing on things that are caloric dense or provide a healthy fat and protein (lots more nuts, peanut butters, etc.).

I agree. I think the biggest hurdle to overcome is identifying your daily caloric need (it’s not 2000 like all boxes say). Then understanding how many calories you are actually eating and go from there.

There is an app called Lose it! that I use for this if anyone is looking for something. Can chart weight as well in the app, just understand that weight fluctuates daily, sometimes by many lbs.

Weight is an interesting thing that a lot of times people make more complicated than it needs to be. It really is as simple as losing weight = burning more calories than you take in, gaining weight = taking in more calories than you burn.

I always thought this as well. I used to try and keep my portions under control which is what I feel kept me relatively thin. I was wrong.

Anyone doing a starvation diet, ie caloric intake reduction, will stand to be very highly likely to put that weight back on extremely easily. If anyone actually watched the videos I posted, you’ll know they explained those diets will slow your metabolism. Your body wants that weight back so it will make you sluggish if you don’t increase your energy intake.

Obesity is a result of hormone imbalance, not eating too much. Have you ever wondered why someone can a ton of junk food and stay so thin? Hormones.

That said, is 100 calories of candy bars going to give your body the same result as 100 calories of broccoli or 100 calories of chicken? No.

This is correct. What happens here is insulin (a hormone) spikes when you eat carbs. When you have high insulin levels for long periods of time, your body will store this energy in the form of fat in your liver and other places in your body.

One interesting theory you hear is that eating 5+ meals a day is healthy for you because it raises your metabolism. Well, this is actually true but the problem is you have an elevated insulin level for pretty much the entire day. If you don’t force yourself to burn this excess energy, you will gain weight. It sort of puts you in a viscous cycle of hunger and exercise.

Another theory is that exercise is necessary for weight loss. This is a myth. When your body recognizes it is getting less energy in, it will do what it can to conserve energy.

Your body always prefers to burn carbs first, protein second and fat last. Why? Because fat is your body’s reserve energy bank. The beautiful thing is if you haven’t burned all the energy in your blood, your body will not trigger a hunger response until this happens. If the end goal is to lose fat, then it makes sense put yourself on a diet that makes fat the main energy source. It makes burning your own fat a seamless process. It’s called ketosis.
