All the bass fisherman commenting on saving Mille lacs’ bass fishery? Don’t mess it up like you did with the walleyes!! Oh ya and all the funny comments about them catching lots of walleyes! The dnr needs to pull their head out of their A$$ and do something right for a change!

For conversation sake… Do anglers of Mille Lacs actually filet smallies? If so, any way to predict harvest estimates?

As I recall… Mille Lacs was catch and release for a long time until the walleye crash took place…

Please correct my lack of knowledge.

Would you be able to elaborate more, I’m confused about the shade part honestly.

Just curious to this whole situation. Awesome to see MN back on the map for these tourneys.

Going back to the beginning, who is the most responsible for getting this here?

Many of the anglers kept commenting that they sure caught a lot of walleyes for there not being many in the lake. A couple said they switched tactics because they could keep from catching too many eyes.

Lots of comments about needing better protection for the smallmouth as well.

That’s just stupid… Some were taken but I honestly believe it wS very isolated. In talking with my friends at Red Door and Fishers they only saw a few smallies show up in the cleaning shack buckets.

Many of the bass pro’s made comments about how great the smallmouth fishing is on Mille Lacs. Some commented about all the walleyes that they caught also! one pro said over 100 in the three days!

As to smallmouth fish caught and brought in to be filleted. Well in what I saw in the buckets at The Red Door Resort this season. I dumped fewer smallmouth this season than last year. We had alot of customers fishing the smaller lakes in the area for pan fish. A few walleyes were kept also!!

Great photo of the dnr!! I think it’s prefect!!

I have a question about culling in mm. I live in la crosse , these guys were just here last week . When fishing in the mn part of the river , they weren’t allowed to cull, but they were culling in mil lacs. Just curious on the different rules . Anyone know more about this?

Because of limit size. The MN/WI border waters including the Mississippi are a 5 fish limit. Most inland MN waterbodies are a 6 fish limit. With 5 fish being a bass tournament limit and the MN rule of not being able to cull once you hit your full limit “no cull” happens. I believe they can still cull if they don’t have a full 5 fish limit in the boat however, but I doubt a tournament angler is going to do that.

They changed the culling law on Mille lacs last year. And the reason why the culling law is in affect for border waters on the Minnesota side. It is to prevent released fish from catching them up by the damn in deep water (scour hole) 9 times out of 10 the deep fish die. I could be completely wrong on this but this just popped up on Facebook last week and that’s what a few people said.

The tournament was also given a special permit on Mille Lacs to allow culling and to change the limits to 5 fish. Because of the date of this tournament, the majority of the state had switched to catch and release only for smallmouth (Sept 12th).
“Beginning May 28, combined possession limit is four, with only one bass over 21″. All bass 17″-21″ must be immediately released.”
“No culling or live-well sorting: Fish taken into possession are considered part of an angler’s bag limit and cannot be exchanged with another fish. However smallmouth bass and largemouth bass may be culled following statewide culling rules.”
So clearly those rules wouldn’t work too well for the tournament.

Not sure about this year but last year Twin Pine launches were bringing in big bags of smallmouth to the extent that there were some starting a campaign to boycott. Meanwhile there were other launches that pretty much forbid keeping SM on their boats.

Yep, this is an old picture and when I said this is an isolated incident that’s pretty much exactly what I meant… Almost everyone up there was discouraging the keeping of smallies on their launches.

They are better than largemouth I will leave it at that, but neither are very good tablefare IMO. I haven’t had one in years, but was on vacation with my father in law who wanted to try them. We even kept small ones but they were not very good.

Agree. If you do this, that and that other thing, yeah you can make them palatable if you’re starving to death in the zombie apocalypse, but they ain’t worth putting a knife too. But that’s just my ignorant opinion.

The lake cycles. The dnr is clueless.

I have eaten a fair amount of them and think they are just fine. One thing I think bass special interests groups have been very successful in is the propaganda regarding bass being bad to eat.

I was still confused by the explanations that were supplied so I will try to simplify it. Correct me if I’m wrong.

MN boarder waters and Mille Lacs are no cull waters.
The rest of the state waters (inland) are open to culling.

Bass Masters was issued a special permit that allowed them to cull on ML. Outside of the tournament, culling is not allowed on ML.

I have taken dozens of people on camping trips where fish frys of walleyes and smallies were on the menu. Once they get put in shore lunch and hot oil literally nobody can tell the difference between fillets.

The smallies are much more annoying to clean than Mr. Walter though.

On Sept 12th almost the entire state (save the Arrowhead region) is Catch and release ONLY for smallmouth.
This permit did more than just allowed culling. It completely changed the limit since it should have been C&R based on the date of the tourney AND had it happened prior the limit was only 4 fish and none between 17 and 21.

See, shows what I know. You can cull bass on ML but not anything else. blush
