The entire rest of the country. Bass fishing brings in more money and conservation to all fishing than any other species. I’m so tired of the walleye only mentality in the state. It’s literally the WORST fish to catch. Branch out a little. I know it’s hard for Minnesotans to do but it’s well worth it. There is a world outside of this state.

Other than the politics it’s about the worst thing to deal with in this state.

Congratulations, you got me going. But seriously, it’s real old.

Haha! I’m with ya, Mahto! Well said!

The only good thing about walleyes is they taste good. Bass are way more fun to catch and smallies pound for pound probably the hardest fighting fish other than a big bluegill. I dont fish bass often, but I dont complain when I catch them. Keeping them is another story however.

I don’t really eat any fish either, so if it comes down to targeting a fish that pulls like a wet sock or a fish that jumps and takes out drag, you know which one I’m targeting and would rather catch.

    Same with muskie fishing.

Bass fishing and trap shooting are in fact the two fastest growing varsity sports in this state. Just a FYI.

Just last week I encountered this again. Smallmouth fishing, catching some sizable fish that are pulling drag. Then “thump” oh I’m snagged, oh wait, its dead weight, oh its a walleye.

The original point of this thread was to point out that someone did in fact report a crime of poaching in progress, and something was done about it. Who cares if it was a bass, walleye, pike, or carp. If its out of season or illegal to keep and the person also doesn’t have an angling license, its a moot point.

Ha. You guys sure are easy to get worked up some times. I see why Dutch does it so much.
Walleyes in Ottertail county must be different. I’d never describe one as fighting like a wet sock. But maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about either. After all I’m just a boring walleye fisherman.

Im not sure why anyone would want to bass fish when you could instead cast huge lures all day to maybe get one follow on a good day musky fishing jester

Caught walleye there too. Still wet noodles.

The thing that really gets us going on here is when someone makes a completely meaningless post trying to be funny and it’s the same dumb comment we’ve heard 100 times this week. It’s nothing personal, but it’s just really really old. If you would’ve had something original I’d have given you some credit.

    Jeez…

I don’t fish walleye for the fight, mainly for the challenge.

And good to hear about the poacher. Everyone should call the TIP line any and every time they see someone poaching, despite what they THINK will happen(or not)!

Carp fight better than your bass or walleye. lol

I always think the, ‘the fish I fish for are better than the ones you fish for’ debates are so silly. Why does it matter? Personally, I fish for fish. Which species depends on the time of year, location and conditions.

That trolling comment sure got a lot of bites.

    First – LOVE the video
Second – your tree huggin governor’s crew is gonna make this a reality in our lifetimes if you give him another term or two.
Third- I’m with FinnyDinDIn – I like anything on the end of my line. A 1 pound carp is a hell of a fight. A walleye tugs enough to make it fun and interesting. A 5″ Sunny is fun too ( this is for you critics of my ice fishing pics) A 2 lb Northern, while slimy is also a blast when it nails my topwater.
The time on the water, the location, the company, nature, doin my thing
ALL are more important than the species to me ( besides, I don’t eat fish)
To each his own – everyone is “right”

My son finished his junior season with the highest average for his school for the second straight year. Luckily their state trap day is after we get back from Canada. HOpefully its not so windy this year. Last year it was bad.

Fantastic, good luck to the jr captainmusky. They didn’t have these out outdoor varsity sports when I was in school.

Yeah I must be catching different fish. Shallow walleyes put the largemouth and pike to shame in terms of fight. But I guess guys using medium heavy baitcasters for flippin docks disagree.

To each their own. If I wanted to fish bass Id move to the south where they aren’t nuisance fish.

METRO was the big key word. But the reading ability is tough some times. Wasn’t much of a argument that your area has fantastic walleye fishing and well worth targeting.

I guess I like fishing bass but it isn’t worth uprooting my family and leaving my job to move south. That’s pretty funny though

You know speaking of metro walleyes it would be super interesting to see a bunch of well know walleye anglers fish like white bear lake for example and see how they do. If someone can put together a nice metro limit I think thats way tougher than on a destination lake. Minus tonka of course.

Hell I can catch walleye on white bear and I’m a dumb bass angler. There’s only one thing you need to know about fishing for eyes on that lake. But I’m not saying what it is.

I agree. Come put together a limit on Chisago and I’d be impressed. Ottertail not so much. I can and do the same.
The main point was the walleye fishing isn’t good here and when it is its pretty lame. Now if we were pounding 25s 28s maybe 15 20s even in a day it would be different. But it’s not how the lakes operate. Now go to the st croix by me it’s 10 x different. But they still fight like a wet noodle

My prediction is that it would be a paltry weigh in. Interesting idea though.

What’s weird is that in almost 25 years of fishing on Lake Minnetonka for crappie, bass, and muskie is that I’ve literally not once caught a single walleye out there. You’d think at one point along the way I would have stumbled into one.

In my 4 times that I’ve fished there I have caught 1 each time. All 4 times were for bass

I catch them on occasion almost all season while bass fishing, but never on that lake. Just odd to me that it’s never occurred. But I’ve also never been checked by a CO either so there’s that too.

I went out there 1 time for walleye and caught 1. Then resorted back to bass fishing

I certainly wouldn’t call it a great walleye lake, but there are big ones in there. You can catch them with walleye techniques too. But it all comes down to timing. It’s EVERYTHING on that lake.

I like the Umy way of fishing, any thing making that line tight is fun. Yesterday I got my 4 year old on some bluegill with a ton of rock bass mixed in and he had a blast.

It’s good to see a non-political fight going on.
