Just ordered a shimano sahara 5000

    http://fish.shimano.com/content/sac-fish/en/home/products/fishing-reels/spinning/sahara-17.html

Planning on putting 80 lb power pro on it but its looking like it might only hold like 90 yards. Should i try to cancel the order?

If so, is there a solid shimano spinning reel for under like 100-130$ thatll hold enough 80 lb power pro?

Well im in the process of cancelling the order. Will a saltwater reel work? Am now looking at the socorro 10000

what’s the problem with 90 yards of 80# Power Pro? What are you planning on using it for?

Fishing for flatheads in medium sized rivers. 90 yards is enough?

It’s enough, fish short line. You don’t need to cast along way to them.

If you need more then 90 yards in most flathead waters the fish will be in the wood and the amount of line won’t be your problem.

On the other hand, many seasoned cat guys have moved away from Power Pro because of unexplained snapping of the line when casting, the way it frays in the last 10 feet and the chalk that comes off of it when new.

My suggestion is to look at Team Catfish Tug o War,
Suffex or Courtland Master Braid, all in 80#.

I think you’ll be happier but you’ll have to make that call.

Catfish have there own special line? I never would have thunked it!!
BTW buying a new reel plus a Shimano can never be a mistake, its not like your buying a new Minnkota full of gadgets. That would be a mistake….unless your best friends with the service guy!!!

You sure it’s not 90 yds of 80lb mono? Power Pro should be a lot smaller diameter. Not that 90 yds isn’t enough. Should be more than enough.

Was strongly considering okuma til i read their bearings dont last as long as shimano. Im partial to shimano reels

Never had any issues with Okuma Avenger Baitrunners. Just bought two to put on my new cat rods for this season.

Power Pro randomly snapping? Sounds odd. Have never had this problem. Even while using 50 lb drag on 80 lb braid.

It’s been awhile since I’ve purchased a reel for fishing. From my long ownership of several Shimano spinning reels. I would not consider a Sahara for catfishing. I feel that they tend to flex and bind up under pressure. There’s even some of that with a Stradic but it does perform so much better. Again newer reel versions tend to improve and perform better than their predecessors.

That being said, saltwater models tend to be lower geared and have less bearings. However also will have some more heavy duty parts inside.
