Devils Update

Much like most of the ice belt, fishing has been slower. Walleyes and perch are still being caught but just not the numbers you would hope. Perch seem to be using 30-40 fow and walleyes around 17-25 fow. I haven’t found any large schools yet but I also have been out much besides today. I should be out later in the week with another report. Dead sticks and downsizing are key!

One exciting thing to note, a buddy of mine was lucky enough to find the ever rare devils lake crappie. Devil’s crappies are very small in population but make up for it in size. The smallest of the 7 caught was a stout 13″. Hopefully pics to follow.

Driving is not a problem. Didn’t get a measurement but I’d guess 25″-30″ of ice. Extensions for sure this year..

1/16/15 Got out around 2 today. Fog and overcast made my decision to target walleyes that much easier. A lot of smaller fish but aggressive. 18′-24′ was most successful. Didn’t have pressure ridges where we were, but I could see one driving on the west side of six mile and all I can say is wow. It’s about 3′-4′ tall and goes for a few miles from what I could tell. If traveling pre or post light use extreme caution!

    Hey, Muskiefever

Quick question. I was contemplating a last minute trip with my son this coming weekend (age 14) and curious what the options might be. Woodlands (which has had tons of good recommendations) said they’re booked all season so that’s out. I could take my portable but not sure how much my son would be game for that. Heard of any other options that would be worth checking out in the DL area?

    1/23 fished 9am-6pm

Couldn’t seem to find large perch today. Found a small school of 8″ers that kept us busy and one random 12″er. Perch 28′-40′. Another night of aggressive walleyes in the 21′-24′ range. Not many large fish, may try deeper. Weather was great today!

    1/24 – 1/25 Report

Where have the big walleyes gone? A lot of 11-13″ walleyes caught this weekend and only a handful of eaters. A few jumbos in the mix. Targeted structure: rocks and sand in 21-29′. Fished 8-20′ as well, same story. Fished deeper, 30′-40′, small perch. Caught a lot of fish this weekend, just not what we were after.

    Has anyone else been out?

I was up there a couple weeks ago and it was tough, fish were negative, but the ones we caught were nice. Talked to some people up this weekend and it was the same story.

Thanks for the reports muskie. Heading up there for the first time in a couple weeks.
You said you caught walleyes at night? I read that there was no night bite on Devil’s lake. Which pushed my group to sleep in a cabin versus wheelhouses.

Sorry about the confusion. ‘Night bite’ to me and my buddies means evening. You are right, there is not a night bite on devils. Why? I don’t know. The last 2 hours of light are key. Once the sun goes down, so does the bite.
