I’m heading to Devils lake in a couple weeks. Looking to catch Walleye and perch. Is a Medium-light rod with 8lb braid the best choice?

That should work fine. Just know there are some rare tanks in there and some very large pike as well. Also, make sure you bring enough tip ups/iFish Pro’s/whatever you use for set lines as you are allowed up to 4 lines per person.

Might not want braid if you plan on fishing outside. Can ice up pretty quick.

That is a pretty standard set up with a floro leader. I would caution that if you plan on being outside a lot that braid freezes pretty bad in cold temps. Also if the bite gets tough, don’t be afraid to small, I mean really small. We’ve had days out there where they were so lethargic that the only thing that would move them was a 1/64oz with 1 red spike as still as possible.

I’d bring more than one rod. You will want/need sensitive rod for fishing perch in deep water. If you don’t want to purchase another rod I’d suggest bringing a clip on type spring bobber for perch.

Yes, bring a sensitive rod, even a noodle style rod for fishing smaller tungsten jigs. I was out there in march last year and the bite was so light, you really had to watch the end of your noodle rod or spring bobber.

I will be out there on 1/18 thru 1/20 and am bringing 2 of each type of rod, now I just need to find the fish once I get there, lol

I will be out there fishing sunday-tuesday. I typically bring three rods. One will be 3 lb suffix ice magic on TUCR Precision Noodle.

Then I have a Bullwhip and TUCR Precision both with 8 lb braid main line and I think 4-6 pound leader that is fluro that I attach via small barrel swivel but we fish with perch patrol out of shacks all the time so ice up is not an issue.

on any drop you can catch perch to pike to walleye so as long as the weather is not an issue your set up will be good with a leader.

I use 8/3 832 on all my rods and just tie different # test flouro leaders on the last 18″.Med action should fine, like said if perch’n definetley bring a noodle, yes we are allowed 4 lines,I usually cover all bases,1 jigging,1 deadstick, and 2 tipups.
Fishing is pretty fair right now,but it never hurts to stop in one of the area baitshops and get the latest info, they all do a pretty good job at trying to get you on fish.

Thanks everyone. Not sure how much shanty time I’ll have vs. outside, so I’ll probably stick to mono. Will definitely bring my crappie rods for perch.
