Made it up north for the first time this spring. Was afraid with all this rain but it doesn’t look to bad. It’s a nice calm evening so I’m going to spray the one clover plot that is being kept with Cleth. I’ll post pics as I go.

Redoing a clover plot but not trying to stir up too many weed seeds. Using a light drag to scratch the surface. Then I’ll seed and spray. The dead grass should protect the new seed.

I was trying to get some new plots going but all I managed to do was get the tractor stuck…..going to be a long learning process before I can get my stuff looking as good as yours.

Boys and girls, the motto for this year is this: If you’re getting work done, DON’T STOP FOR NOTHIN’. Just keep on keepin on.

DT, you’re doing better than 90% of MN if you’re able to work.

I was up to my place Saturday and it was sopping wet, water standing in the plots, soaking, wet ass, everwhere. I didn’t even start up the tractor.

I was up there 2 weeks ago this coming Wednesday and I was scratching up some rock and getting ready to disc. I got the tractor stuck and had to wait an hour and a half, but thankfully my neighbor was there to pull me out then. However…

At that point it was getting late and I headed home. What I SHOULD have done is kept working. That was the last day we had for the past 2 weeks that was dry enough to disc or do any plot work. Ug.

The ONLY think I’ve been able to do at my place this whole spring has been spreading 1 ton of lime. Other than changing oil and other maintenance items, NOTHING has gone on in the plots. I just can’t do it, it’s not even close to marginal.

I guess the good news is that the weeds are well watered. devil coffee moon

Few more pics. Got two plots planted with forage beans, 2 with brassica, 1 with clover, 1 clover plot freshened up and broke ground on a new plot that is just oats for now. The corn was already in before I got there.

I have not seen my plots in person since they were planted. I did get a few pics from my buddy and they did not look good. We had a severe lack of rain after I planted and think they just did not take. Going up on Sunday to take soil samples so I can be prepped for next year. Also make sure everything is good to go for bow hunting. I also bought two 50 pound bags of Rye that I will plant just to have something growing. I think our corn that was planted a few weeks earlier than everything else is doing good but we will see. I’ll post pics next week.

Finally made it up to the hunting land. First time since late May. Habe some good and bad it the plots. Corn is looking great. My turnips and radishes look great even though they are hurried in weeds. Bugs got the leaves bad though. Beans are almost non existent. I’m going to work up where my beans should have been and plant some rye.

Here is an overview of where my radishes and turnips are. Do I mow this mostly down or just leave it? Its all weeds above the plants.

Corn and radishes look great. I don’t see any advantage in mowing now. Looks like the weeds have already seeded out anyway.

Have one spot prepped to be planted in corn next year. Planted rye in it for now. Of course it rained yesterday and I planted it today.

Were you able to bury the rye seed a little after planting? You’ll probably get a quick germination and end up with a nice plot.

Annuals like corn, soybeans, etc are very tough when you live a long ways away from your hunting property. Also, to be honest, a good clover plot is ALWAYS going to draw deer and the window that it will draw them is the entire season from snowmelt to first big snowfall. I love clover.

I didn’t get a chance to roll it like I wanted but did run the wheeler over it some. My clover plots looked good, just weedy. I’ll mow or spray that in the spring and it will be good. All in all there is good food there, they just need to deal with the weeds. Lol.

I’ll post a pic of the rye later, but happy with how it turned out after being planted late and the flooding we had. The deer definitely like the turnips. The tops are all gone and they’ve eaten the part of the turnips that is sticking out of the ground.

It’s going to be a muddy spring if this is how the fall is. The river that goes through the property is up probably 4 or 5 feet.

You made the best out of some very bad conditions this year, DT.

Rye plot looks great. And grain is easy, I think a lot of guys think grain is too easy and they are missing out on something by going with it. No way, those deer will be all over that rye.

A lot of Midwest Monster’s customers are plotting on ground that is sub-optimal from a growing perspective. A lot of us have low-lying plots and this year EVERYTHING about growing stuff there was hard.

It was years like this that make me thankful that I’ve got more than half my ground in clover blends like Mega Clover Plus and AlfalfaMAX so I don’t need to do anything with those plots on a yearly basis. Big relief when the weather is against me.

Also, I LOVE grain like rye because of the easy planting and wide planting window in the late summer.

    Nice plots.
