The first time i ever saw a big buck was when i was twelve… i somehow managed to see a ton of big bucks that year i still havent seen as many big bucks in a year as that year…well anyways i was hunting our famed “big buck stand” everyone has their favorite stand and i was in it, this stand was a nice funnel area between a field and a big ditch… well it started off good with a doe and two fawns coming out into the field about 60 yards away, the doe started kicking at her fawns trying to kick them away i could tell the rut was kicking in… slowly deer started filtering past, little bucks chasin does, fawns and everything comin past…i was havin a blast trying to get a shot at a 110″ eight pointer that was chasing a doe…all of a sudden all of the commotion stops and all of the deer look in the woods right where i am in my stand…”aww shoot'” i thought, “im busted!” boy was i ever wrong i heard a loud grunt then another about 15 yards away as i slowly turned around i saw approx.. a 150-to maybe low 160 class 10 pt. thick, wide, and high my vision of a perfect typical buck he was a beauty the only problem was the doe he was chasin now did have me busted when i turned to look she bolted into the field and sure enough he followed…i still look at that night as one of my favorites as i got to watch that big boy chasing and he even tended to a doe…i never got a shot at him, but boy it sure was a blast

JiraPosts: 517December 5, 2003 at 6:20 pm #1848I shot a doe bow hunting this year near a well established beaver pond. After she was hit she walked off into the patchwork pond and bed down. Several hours later on the way to pick her up I was walking down the edge of the pond through extremely dense pencil thick brush.
For whatever reason, I looked down and saw what looked to be 2 inches of a single tine from a shed sticking out of the snow. I looked at it in disbelief as under the circumstances I wasn’t looking for sheds and even if I was they are hard to find. When I bent down and grabbed hold of the tine a big pile of snow began to move.
Low and behold I was incredibly holding an intact and perfectly clean to the bone skull and set of horns — a perfect european mount. It was a very nice 8 point buck with good mass and a 14 inch spread.
I don’t know of anyone ever to find such a beautiful specimen especially with squirrels and mice that love to chew on the horns. My thought is that is was shot a year previous and dies in the pond. Whoever shot it either couldn’t find it or didn’t want to get wet — and since it was literally in the pond, no mice or squirrels were around to destroy it. Truly a rare find — it made my season.

December 5, 2003 at 7:19 pm #1857With the drought-like conditions this year it could be that it was underwater last year and that kept the varmints off it and the water is lower this year so it was sticking out some. I have heard of similar stories around dry ponds this year.
