Here is a quote from my good friend Mr. Dave Koonce from another post that I think is very fitting here.

    Quote:

One’s views are exactly that,,,,”One’s Views” ,,,none of us can say weather anyone’s view is right nore wrong…We all have views, some of us share ours and some of us keep them to ourselves.
No one person has the right to make someone change anothers mind. Feel free to express your opinion, Yes !!!
But Making someone change their mind , because other people are doing it that way… naaaaa not gonna happen that way here…

Well, mr. sedlmayr my family practices QDM (quality deer meat) where our motto is brown its down…i do not agree with qdm at all.. all you need to do is have your land set up to have the big boys there, food, water, good nutrition, and COVER this is what causes them to get big not qdm we shoot little bucks year after year for meat but we do always have a big boy to put on the wall , we totally diminish the herd year after year in the nine day, but we still manage to have booners on our land consecutively year after year… you just need to learn how to hunt them properly…… maybe them big boys aren’t moving during the day, aka the dredded nocturnal buck..now if you do an old fashioned thing called a deer drive and push them big boys out of that thick cover, by checking every brush pile, ditch, or anywhere else you would think they would lay you might yet get to harvest ur big boy of ur dreams…remember they can hide where u will walk by them about ten yards and never know they were there ..ur a little young but if u listen to ur parents, relatives, or wise elders of the nelson village you will hear storys of how people used to all have the brown its down motto and pushed right away from the opener and saw lots of deer and more shooters then than if u sit all day more big bucks shot back then…than there ever will be… now those hunting techniques will present oppurtunities at ur booners, but if u don’t believe me you can come take a gander at my growing wall of fame

    JUSTAROOKIE,
I assume you hunt in WI, I am not up on what the laws are for taking does & bucks in WI, do you need a permit in WI to take a doe? As you may know the seasons were changed here in MN this year, there is a buck and a doe season, for the doe season you no longer need a permit to take a doe, anyone can shoot a doe or a buck. So in MN it is very easy to shoot a doe, is it the same way in WI? The Reason I ask is if this is the case why wouldn’t you take a doe instead of a young buck? Wouldn’t that leave even more bucks for next year? And if the main goal is to hunt for meat instead of horns a doe tastes better anyway. Don’t take this the wrong way I know that everyone does not believe in QDM and I also agree that QDM should be run by private parties or land owners not the DNR or the government. I am just trying to understand the other side of this debate epically the motto “if it’s brown its down”

    Steve:

This year I was issued a “bonus” permit for an antlerless or Zone T zone. Buffalo County, Unit 61, is a Zone T zone, and as far as I know, everyone who got a license also got an antlerless permit. You also got one with a bow license. I got two with my patrons license.

So in answer to your question, you had a permit in this area to shoot a buck and a doe, or perhpas a buck and multiple does. I don’t think anyone DIDN’T have a doe tag.

When you purchase your wisconsin either sex tag you get one bonus antlerless tag with it. You can buy as many antlerless tags as you want, but they are $12 dollars a crack after the first free one. I bowhunt and gunhunt so i have 2 either sex and got 2 antlerless tags…1 with each.

For me bowhunting i always wait for a big buck with my either sex tag, i always fill my antlerless early so i have some meat in the freezer for sure…but during the 9 day gunhunting season its about putting meat in our freezer anyone can shoot a big buck with a gun look at how many people who dont know much or anything can get lucky with a gun… we shoot whatever during the gun for the enjoyment of hunting not for the enjoyment of horns dont get me wrong i love seeing big bucks, but i dont get the same adrenaline rush shooting one with a gun as i do taking the challange of getting one with the bow..to sum it up bowhunting is to get big boys gun hunting is to put meat in the freezer doesnt matter what meat, i like to put fawns in though the best especially the real small ones where u can peel the backstraps out with your hands that is the best eating in the entire world to me, but big or little you cant ruin venison…if its big mix a little fawn in make sausage, bologna, or my personal fav. venny hotdogs!!!

Just have to add my two cents worth here. Reading all these posts about Buffalo county and QDM I failed to read in any of the posts (not to say my reading is the best) the main reason while big bucks get big. That is genetics. If the genetics aren’t there you will never have big bucks. Yes I agree with the rest about nutrition, habitat, and letting the smaller 1.5 year old bucks go. But you still have to have the genetics in your herd and these genetics have to be passed on from year to year. Just my thoughts. Hey by the way there was sure a lot of deleted posts.
