For everybody, Buffalo County is very similar to other counties, and would be the same as others if 1. people would QDM in lots of areas, and let the 130’s and 140’s go til the next year and have faith that your neighbors aren’t going to shoot hims as well. 2. If other counties had as much publicity as this county does. and 3. land wouldn’t sell for sometimes 1900-2300 per acre for wooded land. You can shoot a big buck anywhere with terrain like this if qdm is practiced, or you have deer sanctuaries near you where no one hunts. The more publicity this county gets, the more land is just going to sky rocket, the more taxes are going to go up, which leaves some more small farmers to sell their land and pretty soon that is all this county will be!!!!!

December 4, 2003 at 4:34 am #1791Well, mr. sedlmayr my family practices QDM (quality deer meat) where our motto is brown its down…i do not agree with qdm at all.. all you need to do is have your land set up to have the big boys there, food, water, good nutrition, and COVER this is what causes them to get big not qdm we shoot little bucks year after year for meat but we do always have a big boy to put on the wall , we totally diminish the herd year after year in the nine day, but we still manage to have booners on our land consecutively year after year… you just need to learn how to hunt them properly…… maybe them big boys aren’t moving during the day, aka the dredded nocturnal buck..now if you do an old fashioned thing called a deer drive and push them big boys out of that thick cover, by checking every brush pile, ditch, or anywhere else you would think they would lay you might yet get to harvest ur big boy of ur dreams…remember they can hide where u will walk by them about ten yards and never know they were there ..ur a little young but if u listen to ur parents, relatives, or wise elders of the nelson village you will hear storys of how people used to all have the brown its down motto and pushed right away from the opener and saw lots of deer and more shooters then than if u sit all day more big bucks shot back then…than there ever will be… now those hunting techniques will present oppurtunities at ur booners, but if u don’t believe me you can come take a gander at my growing wall of fame

December 4, 2003 at 4:53 am #1796i guess im sorry we only have 30 shooter bucks on our land plus however many little ones and 15 hunters thats 15 bucks taken and 15 to grown bigger next year more than likely we are going to shoot the little ones so the bigger ones are going to grown yet again another year and so on so right there is ur qdm in practice yet we are still harvesting little bucks and does so by passin 140 or lower bucks up is not going to make a difference whatsoever more big bucks die from old age than from hunters. Nice bucks ruffs and joe dale

December 4, 2003 at 2:40 pm #1807Playful discussion regarding Buffalo County deer herd. Bottom line is that big bucks have been living there and elsewhere in the state for ever and will continue to live there regardless of any management practices. Buffalo has the terrain, soils/nutrients and subspecies to produce a large animal with large antlers.
IMHO big bucks are more prevalent in certain areas of Buffalo and other counties because of sanctuaries and areas that are managed for trophy bucks which are in their own right also sanctuaries due to their management. My family is from Arcadia and I have hunted in Buffalo my whole life, over 30 years. I have seen many changes with regulations, hunting land practices, land prices and leases taking over and guys with money buying or leasing up large tracts and trophy managing those areas. It is not true today nor was it true 30 years ago that there is a big buck behind every tree in Buffalo County. Years ago big drives were the mainstay of hunting in the county. Big drives are few and far between these days. Drives still occur but now they are fragmented due to “other than farmer” landowners that don’t want anyone else to shoot their deer, stay off my land mentality. I used to be part of drives that were regularly over 2 miles in length and crossed many fences. Large groups would get together and drive land all day for 9 days. Things have changed now. The woods are fragmented and the pressure to get or keep others from getting “your” deer are causing less cooperation among hunters. We are a greedy bunch and will not allow the effective deer drives down the whole ridge to occur anymore. What happens then is that the big bucks know the safe areas and get there and sit tight. Adding to this situation is the fact that Buffalo County has been in every magazine every year as the best palce to shoot a B&C. This is only partly true. B&C animals are now more prevalent across the state due to QDM and the fragmentation mentioned above. Right place at the right time still is the key.
I will post more later on my personal opinions on some other subjects related to Buffalo and deer manegement but I have to get back to work.

December 4, 2003 at 7:47 pm #1820Stick to your convictions Jeff but this kind of slanderous bickering isn’t a good example of what this site is all about either. Their opinion is entitled and welcomed no matter the conflict it presents your convictions, as is yours. But let’s keep it respectable…………..

December 4, 2003 at 8:28 pm #1824I agree with a ton of what bass423 says.
The popularization and reputation of Buffalo County as a big buck land has without a doubt lead to:
-higher land prices
-more “non-residents” buying land
-less large “family and friend” hunting groups
-less deer being moved by people during the hunting season, less big drives, and I would even say less small pushes, and more guys who sit on a stand all day
-more of a “pay to play” situation (have to buy or lease land, as opposed to just gettting permission) to get to hunt Buffalo County deer. These in my mind are facts and are not even arguable.
I also think it is fact if you do not shoot smaller bucks, there will be more large bucks the next year for hunting. I don’t really see how you could argue this. Does this mean there will not be trophy bucks out there if people shoot 1 1/2 year olds. Absolutely not. Does this mean there will be more trophy bucks, possibly, but maybe not. In theory, you could still be whacking alot of 2.5 year old bucks, and the same amount could be making it to 3.5 and beyond, when they get to that trophy status.
I am totally against state/county antler restictions. I myself practice QDM to a degree, I do not shoot 1.5 year old bucks, and I try as best I can to make sure any doe I shoot is a mature doe and not a nubbin. But, I don’t think I have the right to make that call for someone else. Should a new hunter not be able to take his first buck when he pleases? What about the guy who has hunted for 20 years and never got a buck? In addition, I don’t want to have to pull out my “field guide to a shooter buck” if one walks by. When do we go from hunting and choosing our kills to basically just farming and harvesting deer? I have some real issues with the idea of thinning “management bucks” out of the herd as well. You better REALLY REALLY know your deer herd to decide which smaller bucks aren’t passing on the right genetics.
I find the Earn a buck, and people’s perception of the deer herd size, interesting. Does anyone know exactly how the DNR develops the management goals for a unit? Well, that’s a topic for another time as this is rambling on. One last thing, there is NO WAY outfitters or anyone should be exempt from earn a buck if that is the rule.

There are some good posts on this thread and some not so good posts that are getting out of hand. Everyone has there views and they are welcome to discus them here in a adult like manner, any bickering or personal shots at others will not be tolerated here.I have a favor to ask of everyone here. When someone posts pics of deer they have harvested I do not what it to turn it to a big debate like this one has turned into on this post. Start a new post for these kinds of topics otherwise you are just taking away from what the original poster had intended, just to share pics with the rest of us that they are proud of. Buffalo County is a good topic but it does not belong here with piratepete54’s pics.

December 5, 2003 at 2:04 am #1830Here is a quote from my good friend Mr. Dave Koonce from another post that I think is very fitting here.
Quote:
One’s views are exactly that,,,,”One’s Views” ,,,none of us can say weather anyone’s view is right nore wrong…We all have views, some of us share ours and some of us keep them to ourselves.
No one person has the right to make someone change anothers mind. Feel free to express your opinion, Yes !!!
But Making someone change their mind , because other people are doing it that way… naaaaa not gonna happen that way here…
