First time to this forum. I hope I’m not reposting.

I’m going to try and get more details. Thought you venison folks would be interested.

“He got it just south of north branch, right by our church.

Cabala’s sports has already offered him $50,000 for the mount!”

There’s been an albino spotted a handful of times up around a little town called Coggon (if I remember the stories right). From reports, he’s a pretty good buck, but here in IA they’re protected.

Never really figured that one out (i.e. why).

Does anyone know if Albino’s are illegal to shoot in WI? I think they are, and the other 3 guys in my party were sure of it.

The reason I ask is, today a guy in my party walked up on one in a bed, and sat 15 feet from it. It is a huge 9 point, probably 12 inch tall tines, 20+ spread. He scared it up, and it ran down in the woods. When we all met at the truck, we saw it in the woods, so we ran up with a video camera and got some video of him. The rack is just massive. The deer itself looked in poor shape, it moved very slowly, like it was arthritic or something.

If it would have been a legal shoot, my buddy will probably need suicide watch!!

That is a great looking deer. I actually heard about the deer on Saturday because one of my friends knows the guy who shot it. I heard that he has no plans of selling the mount at this point. That deer is definitely the deer of a lifetime. I know it is hard to put a price tag on a deer mount, but to me it is worth way more than 50k.

That deer is too cool. I wonder if he’ll get the $50,000 in store credit? LOL

I’ve always been told they were protected in WI too but I haven’t verified it.

I copied this from the DNR Regs online. I guess it says you can’t shoot an albino, but why do they have to word it so wierd. Wouldn’t “It is illegal to kill an albino or white deer……” be easier to understand rather than putting it in the same sentence with velvet antlers?

    7. Transport, possesion and sale of deer
    It is illegal to:
sell, purchase, or barter, or offer to sell, purchase or barter any deer or part thereof except: the head and skin of any deer lawfully killed, when severed from the rest of the carcass.

to possess a deer with broken or removed antlers which makes determination of legality doubtful, unless during gun deer season, you possess a valid hunters choice, bonus or Zone T antlerless permit or are in an either sex hunting zone.

possess a deer carcass unless tagged and registered as required.

possess deer antlers in velvet and albino or white deer which are all white except for hooves, tarsal glands, heads and parts of the head.

transport another person’s unregistered deer unless accompanied by the person issued the carcass tag. Once registered, anyone may transport the animal. Note:
Residents and nonresidents may transport legally possessed deer out of state once registered. Attention: for CWD Zones see page 32.

Also, does this mean you can’t shoot a buck still in velvet in WI?

The way this reads, (for legal, lawyer mumbo-jumbo), I interpret this as referring only to albino velvets and the albino deer itself. Re-read “It is illegal to: Possess (harvest, kill) deer antlers in “velvet AND albino”…………..”and” is a tie clause by my understanding. Not just velvet, but velvet AND albino…………..and then the including statements of a white deer.

Why they’re protected…………I’m not certain but my guess is because of the rarity. I got to see a half-albino near Park Rapids, MN once………….very unique and very cool looking! One of my uncle’s also has an old photo of a buck harvested that had “4 white socks”. That was cool too!

You may be right kid, that is my point, too damn confusing. Make it easy to read!!

I think they are protected because of rarity myself. I know for Non-hunters who like to see deer (my mom and wife as a sample!), seeing the albinos is a big treat. This is the second one that has been seen on the land we hunt, a doe was also a few years back (not by me though). We seem to have quite a few in Southern Buffalo County.

If a deer or any other animal is only part white it is not an albino. It is called piebald. Piebald animals do have an adequate supply of pigments in their skin only it is not spread out evenly across their body. That is what causes the white parts.

Jez, I’m glad I gave up deer hunting when they came out with bucks only. I can’t keep the fishing regs straight much less the hunting laws. (When fishing with stillakid and the dnr approaches turn the boat around so he’s on the MN side)

Soon the hunting fishing licenses will run about $200. and come complete with a palm pilot. The main page will be the search feature!

Wha????? What’s that gonna do? You feelin’ alright or did a door just hit you in the nose? Skip this mornin’s coffee perhaps?

I’ve decided to invent the BB Bomber………..a foam padded helmet that will guard my melon from “stray” flying jigs and snag them at the same time! Provided I get real selective in fishing partners, I just might fill another Plano tray full of jigs!
