Made a trip up to the hunting property to check out the snow situation. Still impressive snow depths west of Carlton. The yard had drifts 4-5 ft high. Generally 18-24″ snow depth with plenty of drifting all around. Did a short tour of the woods with snow shoes. Plenty of work. Was glad to see some fresh deer tracks, however, this winter will take its toll.

In areas where there isn’t a lot of agriculture activity where there are feed sources other than scrub and brush, I’m sure this will be a hard, hard winter in northern MN.

Add to that the fact that the wolves and coyote numbers are at record highs and it makes it a really bad time to be a deer.

Almost certainly numbers will be down dramatically in most places in northern and NE MN. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but given the trend was already in a downward direction, this hard winter represents bad timing.
