Against my better judgement I went out this weekend. 17 below at the farm when we woke up. Only sat for a couple hours each time. High for Saturday was 8 below. Did not see any deer, but this guy came through a bit after I went in to warm up. All I got was frost bit ears and a picture

Box blinds are a hunter’s friend this time of year no doubt! You are tougher than me. I’d have sat on the sideline last weekend.

I know, I have 6 of them, but wouldn’t you know none of them are in the right area I gotta build a couple more this spring.

Kudos to you for lasting 2 hrs.

I was out with Stick and String last night for 1.25 hrs. The windchill was -21 below. I hear tonight will be even colder. I ended up seeing 11 deer and saw 4 the second I stood up in the stand. All were too far out and nothing with head gear. I need to make a box stand in the worst way. The portables make too much noise when it gets this cold.

Anyone have a good blueprint of a box stand they are willing to share?

I’ll try to draw up some rough measurements we have for our blinds.

I don’t have a blueprint, but my latest edition that I like the best are 4’x6′ have access through a trap door on the bottom, have windows almost as wide as the wall on all 4 sides 40″ up from the floor and 16″ tall. A slanted roof with the tall side facing south or southeast. I don’t have a pic of it, but here is Dad’s stand, same thing only with a stair case leading up to it for the old timer.

What kind of cost should I expect to make a Tower Stand vs buying one? I really like the vertical windows that some models have for easier archery shots. Does it matter if I use treated lumber? I guess, I’m looking for pros and cons. This cold weather sucks but the deer are hammering the food sources and it would be nice to have a comfortable option to hunt.

In my opinion, you need a higher ceiling and a different window structure to hunt with a bow from these stands. 4×6 just isn’t quite enough space.

My last one was 5.5 x 6′ inside. That is the minimum I’ll build one again. I think I built my last stand from all wood for around $750, made my own windows from plexiglass.

I don’t have time right now, but I’ll get some more thoughts put together on this.

    Kooty-
I’m thinking some type of octagon shape will be needed to accomplish what I’m looking for. Gonna be interesting to see what develops as I take on this project. 1st step is to get the land owners permission. Crossing fingers

Ouch that is chilly! I’m toast in a tree stand in negative temperatures! I’ll opt for a ground blind with a heater any day of of the week!

It sounds like you are wanting a high rise gazebo!
