    Well, it’s that time again.

Time to pick the go-to gun for deer season and start getting her dialed in.

For almost 10 years now I’ve been hunting the rifle season with a Contender handgun. This has totally changed my pre-season routine because I discovered pretty quickly that hitting something with a handgun at anthing beyond 30 feet is a little tougher than they make out in the movies.

I’m shooting a 7-30 Waters cartridge these days. A .30-30 case necked down to 7 MM and reformed. Recoil and muzzle blast are significant, but reasonable given the performance. For the original Contender frame, I think this is about as good as it gets. I folded a small buck up last year and terminal performance was impressive. Hopefully I can turn this into a winning streak.

So down to the shop I go to load up the practice ammo and get things rolling once again. Dry fire practice, a few weekends at the range, etc. Here we go again.

What are you taking to the field this year?

You should have let me take this to SD on the p-dog adventure back in June. I could have gotten her all dialed in (and broken in) for you.

Those 250’s can get heated up pretty darn hot on a good P/dog colony

That’s why I would much rather be shooting Kooty’s rifle.

Anyway, what’s a few hundred or thousand rounds down the barrel anyway? Even after I heat it up to glowing red a couple of dozen times, it’ll still shoot good enough for him.

One night at Camp Ripley. We are performing our silly night qualify, 20 yards or less. Gas mask on and off. Turns out my unit “over ordered” a bunch of .223 rounds. I’m talking thousands. I head back up from the fireing line. Load my BDU pockets with as many 30 round mags as I can carry. They would open the firing line. I would dump 30 rounds in no time, reload, repeat. This was back when I had the full auto M16. My hand guard go so hot I couldn’t hold the rifle. The barrel was white. I’m guessing the accuracy on that barrel slipped a bit that night.

Which reminds me of the summer I decided the Guards were no longer for me. I’m at my last summer camp in Guernsey, WY. We are at the .50 cal qualifying range. I’m first up. Load up a box, slap the rounds in and give the hammer a yank. I’m doing as any good little soldier will do, 2-3 round bursts. Enjoying watching dirt fly 1000 yards away. Not sure what got into me that day, but I decided to see what this beast would do. It’s mounted on the turret on top the 548(tracked ammo vehicle). I let the big dog eat. Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop…..Full auto til the can was empty. Dirt and and tracers all over down range!!

A fairly new Lt came down the gun line. Apparently he really wanted to talk to me. I had no idea I was that popular. I left the gun line slightly lighter that day, but not even an irate Lt. could wipe the smile off my face. Needless to say, the mitts we used to change those barrels weren’t thick enough that day either. Hot, hot, hot.

So, who doesn’t enjoy burning out barrels!!

Just ordered mine yesterday Savage 111 in 243 deer first. This will be my 600 yard gun…I hope. Getting a bad itch to start shooting long range and this should be a good start.

Been reading way to much on glass but I believe it will be the Vortex Viper 4 X 16 X 50. Next trying to decide if I want to go to a rail system to mount scope.

Here in SE MN for years I have shot a Remington 870 and it has been a great gun for me, I killed allot of deer with it over the years. This year I have decided it is time for a change and I will be picking up a Savage Model 220F 20 Gauge. I have heard and read very good things about this gun, it will be the next best thing to shooting a rifle (SE MN is a shot gun only zone) and I can not wait to put it through its paces and put my first deer down with it!
