The blackpowder residue is very corrosive. So much so, rusting can occur over night in some instances. I would recommend cleaning it thoroughly after you shoot it. I clean mine at the end of the day. Even if that means pulling the breach plug out and retreiving the unused powder and slug. What’s more expensive, a 100 grains of powder and a slug, or a new barrel? Keep it clean and it should last forever. As for leaving the powder and slug in the breech, I guess I wouldn’t recommend it.

I did clean it after the last time I shot it thoroughly inside and out, which was 4 days prior to hunting opener. The rusting is happening on the outside of the barrel, the inside is fine. That’s why I don’t get it???

November 18, 2003 at 1:38 pm #1333If it’s happening outside of the barrel away from the the muzzle I would take it back to the dealer for an inspection. They may be able to help you out. Just by description, it sounds defective. I hope you are able to resolve your problem.
I hope to shoot a deer with my smoke wagon this weekend. I received a hot tip on a shooter class buck last night.

November 18, 2003 at 3:52 pm #1487Is it possible that condensation is forming on the cold barrel and your leaving the gun in a case. I’ve rusted many a barrel by leaving them overnight in a cloth case. stainless steel is stainless, not rustproof. And I also unload my ml daily. I’ve also pull off the end of my ramrod trying to dislodge stuck bullets due to corrosiveness of the powder. Now I clean my guns daily with bore butter. Just make sure the nipple/primer area is free of moisture or oil when reloading.

November 18, 2003 at 4:46 pm #1489I guess I thought that leaving it in a hard case in the garage where the temp is near the same as outside, that the moisture would not be a factor without a great change in temp. I did think that stainless steel was rust proof. You never see rusty milk trucks at the dairy farms down here. Thanks, for the input, I’ll always unload it from now on. I’ll still see if Cabela’s will do anything about it. It’s worth a try.
Thanks, again guys

I guess you live and learn.November 19, 2003 at 1:02 am #1506Those hard plastic cases are death on guns. Great for banging around in the truck but they attract moisture and will rust a gun overnight.Never store a gun in one.
