Shot this beauty around 9 yesterday morning! I wish there was more of a story but there isn’t much as it all happened in under 30 seconds.
As I was texting some buddies to see what they had been seeing, I realized that I needed to be paying better attention because I was sure the bucks were on the move. So I shut my phone off and slipped it back into my pocket. I looked up and he was coming and was only 25 yards away. He was walking the upper side of the ridge scent-checking for does. A quick glance and I realized he was a real nice deer. He was coming straight at me, but there was good brush between us so I was able to stand up and grab my bow to prepare for the shot. He stopped once behind a tree for 5-10 seconds before trotting out into my shooting lane. I grunted for him to stop and he didn’t respond so I grunted louder. He threw on the brakes 5 yards from the base of the tree and probably 25-30 feet below my stand because of the steep sidehill. 2 seconds later the arrow was zipping through him.
As he turned to run away, I realized he had a broken brow and that we had him on trail camera. Going into the season, I had set my goal to shoot a deer greater than 140. My heart sank as he was one we figured scored in the low to mid 120s.
Ten yards into his sprint, he was already crashing into trees. 20 more yards and he crashed into a thicket and it was all over. From the time I saw him until the time he crashed was less than 1 minute. Ended up catching both lungs and the top of his heart on the steep angled shot.
At this point in the “Action from the Treestand” thread, I inaccurately posted that I had shot a nice 9. I waited 20 minutes and climbed down to go take a look at him. As I walked up, I thought he was a little bigger than we had originally estimated. And turns out his broken brow actually measures 1 1/8 so I had actually shot a nice 10! And what a brute he was. I had a heck of a time getting him out of the woods on my own.
We ended up taping him last night at 140 1/4 (140 2/8 for you book guys). His 15″ inside spread is a little deceiving but I am so pumped about him. Especially considering the bad run of luck I have had the last couple years. This is the third year in a row that I have shot a buck out of that stand location all from November 4th-11th.
Heading for the taxidermist tonight!
