I have never really put alot of thought in to the matter until I see how badly the 1100 is throwing lead in no specific fashion. 1 week before the season with little time to narrow this down I am borrowing an 870 that is coming with a smooth bore, possibly a rifled if he can find it. Is there any surefire slug out there that would be suggested for this gun?

I shoot hornady SST slugs. Sight them in 2″ high at 50 yards and they are dead on at 150. I have been using them the last couple years with really good results.

Are you shooting smooth or rifled?

I’m a rifle guy but believe the Hornady’s will not work with a smooth bore. Pretty sure you will need to shoot a rifled slug.
    That’s all I know.

IVe been useing an 870 since I was 13. I shoot rem 3 inch sluggers. My dad and uncle shoot the same and always have and we have always stuck to those cause they are solid for us.

I will be getting the rifled barrel and those are exactly what he says he has always put through them with great luck. I think I will go this route with as little time as I have. Thanks for all the feedback.

I used to shoot the Winchester Partition Gold slugs before our zone was converted to rifle. At $15/box they are a little spendy, but deadly to 175+ yards. Before I shot those, I tried to get my 870 to shoot the Sluggers well but never had much luck. However, I was able to get the inexpensive Federals to shoot well through it. At $3-4/box, I would recommend buying a box or two of a couple of them and see how they all shoot before deciding on one slug.

Whoops missed your last post so good luck with the Remmys!

I have spent a LOT of time on the slug selection front in the last couple of years, and here is what I have found.
I shoot a rifled barrel, and if that is an option like you said, I would go with that.
In the case of any smooth bore, I would go with Federal TruBall-these seem to fly the best out to 50-75 yards. Anyone that says smoothbores are consistent past this point is telling farce stories. These are some of the same guys that sling the lead at moving deer with these pumpkin balls.
Rifled barrels and Sabot slugs (the encased style slug with the plastic shroud and smaller diameter bullet within), have come a long way. I’ve paired mine with a scope, but it shot great open sights as well.
You mentioned remington sluggers, and while these will work fine since the rifling will help to stabilize the bullet, it would be ideal to shoot Sabot style slugs. Improved accuracy, consistency, and much greater expansion are what ya pay for. I have really enjoyed shooting Federal barnes expander and Winchester dual bond.
A lot of the slugs will be fine, but just remember, Full bore “rifled” slugs/Foster slugs will work in both smooth and rifled bore. Sabot style slugs should not be shot in smooth bore barrels, though some say it is okay with a “rifled” choke tube.
Slugs are not cheap these days, especially so with the sabot style, but get a couple boxes and go to the range. No matter what you choose, you owe it to the animal to know what your setup does at short and long ranges. Best of luck.

dont agree with that at all I refuse to switch to rifled barrel cause I watched my uncle struggle for years with them before jumping on bored with the same setup I had and I would put my 870 smooth bore up against any shot gun at a range in a shoot out I can shoot softball groups all day long at 100 yards. And have shot many deer standing still and running at 150. Im so sure of that gun I use it over my tc muzzle loader at 150 and I carry both to stand. But its also the only shot gun ive ever used. So ive had alot of time to get really comfortable with it. But thats just what I think and im just an average jo so take it for what its worth.
