Ah yes, it was a nice fish… especially since it was on the last cast. John did a great job of showing me the ropes down in the Wabasha area. Thanks for a great time. I enjoyed meeting you, and learning from you. Thanks for a great day of fishing!
September 30, 2012 at 6:31 pm #203280I’ve be a skeptic about whether the full moon effects deer movement because of what research shows…But i still try to hunt anyway. What are your personal observations about this topic?
Is it worth going out tonight?September 30, 2012 at 7:25 pm #124090I am never happy sitting on the couch so I hunt when I can. There is no doubt for me that deer, (especially mature bucks) move less during shooting hours during a full moon. This is kind of an oxymoron but I will say it anyways… It is not worth pressuring your best spots but the closer you get to their bedding the more likely you will have an encounter during this time of year and moon phase . Great time to take out some does if you are looking for meat. good luck

September 30, 2012 at 8:17 pm #124093I’ve read research and heard testimonies that deer move more midday??
September 30, 2012 at 8:28 pm #124094I have seemed to notice more daytime movement via trailcams during fullmoon periods.
To clarify, more mid-day movement.
September 30, 2012 at 8:41 pm #124096my cams show the same thing… But not the shooters that I am after
October 1, 2012 at 1:38 am #124110From personal experience, I think the wk leading up to the full moon in Oct is the best time to be in the woods. As long as the full moon is during the last 2 weeks of Oct. I figured this theory out 10-12 yrs ago when I would see the biggest bucks of the season year after year during that time frame. Plus, it seems that every year the Bruiser Bucks that I read about in MN Sportsman (that were shot in MN) are between Oct 16-20. My guess is that this year will have the same result.

Almost exclusively evening hunts during the week before/of the full moon. The only time I would venture for a morning hunt during this time frame is on the weekend or if there is a major cold front moving in. I’m not talking 30-35 degrees, I’m saying in the upper teens or low 20’s type cold front. The first real cold front will get deer moving all day and putting the feed bag on. I will even request or take off from work to hunt this 2-3 day window. The “Big Boys” seem to become more visible and predictable because of the conditions.October 1, 2012 at 7:58 pm #124154I took notes on your experience and will see what happens as that time approaches! The full moon is supposed to be on October 30th this year
October 2, 2012 at 10:31 am #124166I’m thinking the 3 days before and the 4 days following the full moon will be amazing. After that, the orange army will be in full force here in MN. That always seem to get deer moving during the day as some hunters leave their stand for lunch and return for the magic hour.
