Since we’re talking about strange critters in Iowa, thought I’d mention that someone over by Council bluffs blasted an adult male mountain lion last week. Souix City journal online had an article on it, and it’s supposedly been confirmed by the DNR to be a true wild, and not an escaped pet.

Lots of buzz about big cats in Iowa the last couple of years. Another guy lost 4 out of 5 hounds to one coyote hunting last year. I think this dude putting it down is a good thing. While the DNR says, “another species is welcome” I think I’ll pull up the welcome mat and meet them with hostility.

That couger was shot about 40 miles from my place and was a 113# male. We’ve actaully had alot of sightings around my area but people are afraid to say they seen one because they don’t want to be laughed at.

They exist in MN and WI too…………..with myself having seen one about 15 years ago. Many areas can support them but the sightings are rare…………..they’re a very secretive animal and if you’re seeing one frequently, it’s a good indicator that there’s more than one. Personally, they don’t bother me too much…………I know they’re around. It’s only when the children are around that I get uneasy. Bears make me feel the same way………..but I don’t go around anticipating hostility or make a point to eradicate them from my area. We’ve co-existed with them in the “bluff country” of WI for decades and while there’s plenty of “scare stories”, the humans are without incident. Family pets and farm animals do become frequent victims though…………..to which I say…………nothing. Nature needs predators……….period. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t kill one over livestock or the family pet, it just means I’m still okay with their co-existance. If I leave animals unattended or unprotected, it’s really just as much my fault. The animals aren’t going to change so it’s my responsibility to adjust to them. They need to learn my area “never produces food”……………..therefore, is not a food source. They go where the belly gets fed.

Good luck down there…………..those are neck-hair raising critters and dangerous, even though the odds are exceptionally low.
